3:18 p.m. Monday — A squirrel may be partly to blame for a two-vehicle wreck that left two women injured in Slippery Rock Township.

The crash happened, according to a police report, when Lynette R. Stoughton, 26, of Slippery Rock swerved to avoid a squirrel, causing her car to travel into the passing lane and hit a sport utility vehicle on Slippery Rock Road near Davcol Lane.

The SUV, driven by Veronica L. Atwell, 55, of Slippery Rock, spun out and the car slid off the road and hit a speed limit sign following the collision.

Atwell was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital with unknown injuries. Stoughton was treated at the scene for apparent minor injuries. Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

The Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company and Slippery Rock Ambulance assisted at the scene.

Police cited Stoughton for disregarding traffic lanes.

1:07 a.m. Saturday — Samuel A. Russell, 34, of Allegheny Township was arrested for driving under the influence on Parker Pike near Sertik Road in Allegheny Township. Police said they stopped him after they saw his speeding pickup truck cross the double yellow line.

Russell admitted that he had been drinking earlier that night, court documents said, and he subsequently filed field sobriety tests.

A breath test showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.125 percent, documents said. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.

In addition to DUI, Russell is charged with driving at an unsafe speed, disregarding traffic lanes and careless driving.

Friday — Keith J. Fowler, 47, of Mercer Township was charged with drugged driving stemming from an August erratic driver call in Clay Township. He was subsequently found passed out behind the wheel of his car stopped in the middle of Muddy Creek Drive.

The Unionville Volunteer Fire Department was first on scene and noticed Fowler appear to be concealing a hypodermic needle in his right hand, according to court documents.

Firefighters shut off the engine and took the car keys after the defendant apparently tried to drive away. Police said he acknowledged having used heroin, documents said.

Police arrested him after he failed field sobriety tests. He was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test. Toxicology reports later showed he had several drugs in his system including fentanyl, a synthetic opiate painkiller; benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine; and prescription medication.

Fowler is charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and careless driving.

Friday — Nathan Y. Scherer, 36, of Petrolia was charged with drunken driving stemming from a July call for a man passed out in the driver’s seat of a car partially on Murtland Road in Concord Township.

Police said an ambulance crew was the first on scene about 3:20 a.m. July 19 and found Scherer sleeping. He later told police that he “pulled over and passed out,” according to court documents. He apparently did not know where he was.

Scherer, who appeared impaired, started and then stopped field sobriety testing, documents said. He also refused to take a breath test.

He is charged with DUI and careless driving.

Friday — Police charged a Beaver County man with DUI in connection with a traffic stop last month on South Benbrook Road in Center Township. Tyler M. Biskup, 25, of Ambridge was pulled over about 6 p.m. Sept. 19 because his sport utility vehicle had a brake light that wasn’t working.

Troopers suspected Biskup was impaired following filed sobriety testing and he was taken for a breath test that showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.123 percent.
