Butler PoliceWednesday — Police charged a Tioga County man with drugged driving and having drug contraband in his pickup stemming from a July traffic stop at North Main and Walnut streets.Charles E. Varner, 57, of Covington, was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test that showed he had cocaine in his system, according to court documents.An inventory search of his truck turned up two marijuana grinders, three drug-smoking pipes and other contraband.Varner is charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving a vehicle with an improper sunscreening device and a lighting violation.1:03 a.m. Sept. 3 — Justin M. Sanderson, 29, of Butler allegedly was caught with heroin and impaired in the entranceway to the Butler Arbors apartment building on Lincoln Avenue. Police said when they found him, he was shirtless, pacing back and forth and talking to himself.He told police that he passed out at nearby Father Marinaro Park and had gone into the Arbors “to get warm,” according to court documents.Sanderson was arrested for being intoxicated in public. He was searched, police said, and found with two stamp bags and several empty bags of suspected heroin, a syringe, metal spoon and a small scale.He is charged with possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, loitering and prowling at night and public drunkenness.

Butler Twp PoliceAug. 23 — Police charged two out-of-county men in connection with the June theft of a television at the Butler Commons' Walmart. Richard J. Boggs, 32, of New Castle and Joseph W. Holliday, 26, of Beaver Falls, are facing felony and other charges.The defendants are accused of entering the store around 7 a.m. June 12 and stealing a 50-inch TV valued at $398. They loaded it into a sport utility vehicle and made their getaway, a police report said.A store employee and a customer in the parking lot provided police with information about the vehicle that helped solve the case, the report said.Boggs was arrested and arraigned Sept. 3 on felony counts of retail theft and conspiracy to commit retail theft and a misdemeanor count of receiving stolen property. He is free on nonmonetary bond.Police obtained an arrest warrant for Holliday on a felony count of conspiracy to commit retail theft and a misdemeanor count of receiving stolen property.

State Police, Butler7:59 a.m. Tuesday — A Chicora teenager was taken to a hospital after she lost control of a pickup truck and ran into trees and shrubbery along Branchton Road just west of Hogg Lane in Slippery Rock Township. Slippery Rock EMS took Macie L. Helch, 18, to Grove City Medical Center with unknown injuries.5:48 a.m. Sept. 16 — A Fayette County teenager was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence after he crashed into a pickup that was stopped at a red light on Route 356 and Neupert Road in Jefferson Township. Charges are pending against the suspect, an 18-year-old Connellsville man. Police did not release his name.The suspect and his three passengers, all teens from Fayette County, refused medical attention, but the driver of the other vehicle was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for possible injuries. Police also did not identify that driver. The car had to be towed.5:37 a.m. Monday — Jonathan M. Mangol, 34, of Cabot was injured in a head-on crash on Brewer Road north of Saxonburg Boulevard in Clinton Township.Police said Mangol was traveling a curve when the car he was driving slid across the center line and struck a pickup driven by Timothy J. McCorkle, 64, of Saxonburg. McCorkle was not injured.Mangol was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. He was cited for driving on the wrong side of the road.3:05 p.m. Sunday — A deer ran into a sport utility vehicle driven by Donna L. Buckham, 57, of Butler on Route 356 just north of Franklin Drive in Winfield Township. She was not injured, but her vehicle had to be towed.3:15 p.m. Sept. 7 — Both drivers suffered minor injuries in a rear-end collision on Route 38 at Branchton Road in Washington Township. Eden L. Craig, 20, of Corsica, Clarion County, was taken to Clarion Hospital and Jeanne D. Kepple, 72, of Hilliard was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital after the crash.Police cited Craig for careless driving.Sept. 6 — Zachary A. Deal, 20, of Karns City was charged with being impaired on alcohol and drugs stemming from a June incident in Clay Township. Police said he was driving an SUV on the 800 block of Mahood Road around 4:15 a.m. June 23 when he traveled into a yard.Deal is charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, DUI by a minor and disregarding traffic lanes.11:45 a.m. Sept. 5 — James R. Masterson, 29, of New Castle was injured after the SUV he was driving caught fire on Interstate 79 in Jackson Township. Police said he was able to pull onto the shoulder of the highway and get out of the vehicle when he saw fire and smoke coming from the engine compartment.Harmony volunteer firefighters arrived and put out the fire, and Harmony EMS treated Masterson for possible smoke inhalation, according to a police report. He was taken to UPMC Passavant-McCandless in Allegheny County.12:14 p.m. Sept. 2 — A car driven by Christian L. Boyd, 20, of Pittsburgh struck the back of an SUV on I-79 south in Muddy Creek Township. Neither Boyd nor the other driver, Amber R. Grier, 33, of Pittsburgh, was injured.

State Police, New CastleMonday — Jerry B. Bodish, 40, of Harmony was charged with having marijuana and a smoking device stemming from a traffic stop last month in Perry Township. Police said they learned there was a felony arrest warrant out for him following the stop around 8 p.m. Aug. 28 at Route 488 and Pleasant Hill Road.Bodish was arrested and turned over to Lancaster Township police in Butler County, who had the warrant for him in connection with an Aug. 19 domestic dispute.State police said they found the suspected marijuana and other contraband after searching his vehicle. He is charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, driving a vehicle without valid inspection and a lighting violation.
