7:30 p.m. July 21 — A 45-year-old Allegheny County woman was arrested on charges that she and two others tried to steal a shopping cart full of groceries at the Giant Eagle store on Route 19.

The suspect, 45-year-old Jennifer Schipani of McKees Rocks, told police that she and the others had planned to trade the $136.79 in merchandise, including meat, boxes of pop and laundry detergent, for heroin, according to court documents.

Police were called after an employee saw a man leave the store with a loaded cart. The employee yelled for him to stop. Instead, documents said, the man ditched the cart and ran to a car that was being driven by one of the other suspects.

The man got inside and as the car pulled away, the other suspect, believed to be Schipani, was seen running along side the car. The driver momentarily stopped long enough for her to get into the rear passenger seat.

A short time later, documents said, Cranberry officers learned that Franklin Park police in Allegheny County were chasing after the suspects’ car. During the chase, the male suspect jumped out of the car and ran off.

Franklin Park police eventually stopped the car and took Schipani and the driver, identified as Clara M. Bass, 38, of McKees Rocks, into custody. The women were subsequently turned over to Cranberry police.

While questioned by police, Schipani identified her boyfriend, Keith E. Tosadori, 36, of McKees Rocks, as being the other suspect, documents said. She also admitted the motive for the attempted grocery theft was drugs.

The trio, she recounted, according to a police affidavit, “all agreed to go to the Giant Eagle in Cranberry Township to steal groceries that they would then trade for heroin.”

District Judge Sue Haggerty arraigned Schipani, who has one prior shoplifting conviction, on misdemeanor charges of retail theft and conspiracy to commit retail theft. She was placed in the Butler County Prison on $5,000 bail following arraignment.

Franklin Park police charged Bass with reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct and seven traffic violations in connection with the chase. They also later arrested Tosadori and charged him with loitering and prowling at night, and disorderly conduct.

Bass and Tosadori, as of last week, have not been charged in the Cranberry incident. A telephone call to police was not returned Monday.
