12:35 p.m. Sunday — Devaughn O. Irvin’s attempted getaway from his home in the 200 block of American Avenue was thwarted when an officer chased him down.
Police had gone to the home looking for Irvin, 33, on charges in connection with a suspected domestic dispute earlier that morning.
The suspect is accused of placing his live-in girlfriend, 24-year-old Samantha Jo Conner, in a stranglehold and refusing to let her go for about 10 minutes, according to a police report.
She eventually got free but Irvin took her phone so she could not call for help. Later, she ran to a neighbor’s home and notified police.
The defendant was gone when police got to the home. Police later obtained an arrest warrant for Irvin on charges of unlawful restraint, simple assault and harassment.
Shortly after noon, a neighbor notified police that Irvin was back at his house. Officers knocked on the door but got no answer. A short time later, police spotted the suspect running out the back door. An officer chased him onto Cleveland Street and Whitmire Avenue, where he was eventually nabbed.
Irvin was arraigned on charges stemming from the domestic dispute and an additional charge of resisting arrest for his failed getaway.
Police, meanwhile, determined that Conner failed to notify police once the defendant had returned to their home. They said she also alerted Irvin that officers were at the door when they showed up the second time.
Police said Conner faces a charge of hindering apprehension or prosecution.

A Butler Ambulance Service crew treated McNamee with naloxone, commonly called Narcan, which reverses the effects of heroin. Police said a search of the suspect’s purse turned up an empty suboxone wrapper.
