Butler PoliceAug. 30 — Police obtained an arrest warrant for Darrell Merriwether, 48, no known address, on charges he failed to return a rental vehicle to a city business.Merriwether on Aug. 1 rented a van from Leeway Rent-A-Car on Pillow Street. He was to return the vehicle Aug. 3, according to court documents, but didn't.The business manager and police on Aug. 4 both tried to call the suspect, but they could not contact him. The company on Aug. 9 sent him a certified letter, which he signed for Aug. 11, documents said.However, Merriwether and the van still remain missing. He is charged with a felony count of theft of leased property.Aug. 30 — Brannon J. Irvin, 29, of Butler was charged with the April 19 “accidental” vandalism of a car on the 300 block of Second Street.Irvin's troubles began about 4 a.m. when he got into an argument with two other men. During the quarrel, according to court documents, one of the other men threw a piece of rebar at Irvin.The suspect, in turn, picked up the rebar and threw it, apparently at the other men's getaway vehicle. But it missed that car and hit the trunk of another one parked nearby, causing $966.51 in damage, documents said.Irvin is charged with criminal mischief.Aug. 30 — Police charged Benjamin C. Perry, 55, of Adams Township with being more than three times the legal limit for alcohol about 2 p.m. Aug. 26 when they stopped him traveling the wrong way on West New Castle Street.The arresting officer noticed an open can of beer in the center console cup holder and smelled a “strong odor” of alcohol coming from the suspect, court documents said.Perry was taken to the state police barracks for a breath test, which showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.268 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.In addition to driving under the influence, he is charged with driving the wrong way on a one-way street.

Cranberry Township Police1:30 a.m. Saturday — Jason M. Roccia, 28, of Cranberry Township was arrested after he allegedly assaulted a woman during a domestic dispute at their mobile home along Route 19.Roccia is accused of grabbing the woman by the throat and slamming her against a wall, according to court documents.Police said the defendant was intoxicated and he had caused a disturbance at a bar earlier in the night.Roccia was arraigned on charges of simple assault and harassment, and placed in Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail.

Butler County Drug Task ForceAug. 29 — Three people were charged with possession of drug paraphernalia stemming from an Aug. 1 traffic stop at West Cunningham and Mercer streets in Butler.Charged are Kevin E. Gumpp Sr., 52, of New Castle; Robert L. Halstead, 47, of Washington Township; and Nancy A. Hinchberger, 49, of Butler.An officer conducting task force patrols stopped the suspects in a car, which Gumpp was driving, that had an expired inspection sticker, according to court documents.The officer searched the defendants after he noticed Halstead, a back seat passenger, reach into his pocket and drop a drug smoking pipe onto the floor. Gumpp and Hinchberger also were found with drug pipes, documents said.A search of Gumpp's driving record, meanwhile, showed he had nine prior convictions for driving with a suspended license, documents said.In addition to possession of drug paraphernalia, police charged Gumpp with driving during suspension and driving a vehicle without valid inspection.

State Police, Butler1:37 a.m. Monday — Audrey McKivigan, 25, of Butler was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of a controlled substance at Pillow and West Cunningham streets in Butler.3:54 a.m. Saturday — Brian Stright, 49, of Butler was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of a controlled substance on Main Street in Butler.1:05 a.m. Friday — Michael A. McPherson, 25, of Slippery Rock lost control of his car and slid into a ditch on Route 258 just west of South Creek Road in Slippery Rock Township. McPherson was not hurt, but his car, which flipped onto its side, had to be towed.
