1 a.m. today — One person was hurt when a pickup truck driven by Nathan D. Michael, 16, of Butler struck and sheared off a utility pole at West Cunningham and Pillow streets. Kameron W. Moore, 18, of Butler, a passenger, suffered moderate injuries. He was wearing a seat belt.Michael told police he lost control of the truck after he fell asleep. But Moore remembered that Michael was “hitting a cigarette” when he hit the pole. Police cited Michael for careless driving.6:58 p.m. Thursday — Rachel Ann Mangan, 24, of Butler is accused of stealing $5 from a tip jar at Pizza Joe's on North Main Street.An employee told police that she noticed that a $5 bill, which had been in the jar, was missing from it. The worker remembered that 15 minutes earlier, she had served a customer — a woman who paid for food with a credit card.The employee reviewed the store surveillance video, which showed that same woman taking the money from the jar. The worker identified Mangan as the alleged thief after checking the earlier receipt.Police contacted Mangan, who admitted being in the store but denied taking the money from the tip jar.“It was then brought to her attention that the incident was on video,” according to a police report. “She replied, 'Oh.'”Police charged Mangan with theft.12:37 a.m. Thursday — A Butler man is charged with simple assault after allegedly attacking his neighbor with a small charcoal grill on North Washington Street.John J. Jackson, 36, is accused of thumping 34-year-old William D. Nuce after Nuce spent roughly two hours Wednesday night at the apartment of Jackson's girlfriend.According to a police report, the two men were awaiting Jackson's girlfriend while grilling earlier that evening. The woman never showed up so Nuce went to her apartment on his bike.Nuce told police he was there for about two hours when Jackson began calling. When Nuce returned to his home in the 400 block of North Washington Street, Jackson hit him with the small grill on the porch.Police, in investigating the call, noticed small cuts on Nuce's hands, arms and face.Butler Twp. Police2:37 p.m. Wednesday — Suspected shoplifter James Mullen, 36 of Butler was arrested after he returned for a fraudulent refund a bed cover that he had not paid for at the Kohl's store in the Butler Crossing shopping plaza.Mullen ran from store security but county sheriff's deputies caught him near the store. Police found him with suspected drugs and contraband. He faces charges of retail theft and possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.The suspect was turned over to Butler police, who wanted him on a warrant.Butler County Drug Task ForceThursday — Police filed charges against two suspected heroin dealers stemming from separate controlled drug buys this year in Butler.Carrie Jean Cubbage, 26, and Robert Lee Miller, 40, both of Butler, face felony and other charges.Cubbage on April 26 and May 16 sold heroin to a police informant for $60 each day on West Jefferson Street, according to court documents.She is charged with two counts each of delivery of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance.Cubbage was arraigned and placed in the Butler County Prison on $50,000 bail.Miller and a police informant used a cell phone to set up a drug deal March 20 at the Farmer's Market at Race and Shore streets, where he sold 10 bags of heroin for $100, documents said.He is charged with two counts each of delivery of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, criminal use of a communication facility and possession of a controlled substance.Miller is free on his own recognizance.State Police, Butler10:57 a.m. Wednesday — An unknown white woman in her 20s drove away after her car rear-ended another vehicle on the Route 422 on-ramp at Route 68 in Summit Township. The hit-and-run vehicle is described as a dark green or black, older model Nissan sedan. The car's front end and headlights sustained “noticeable damage” in the crash.State Police, Franklin4 p.m. Thursday — A Clearfield County teenager was hurt when she lost control of her car and crashed into a guardrail on Interstate 80 in Clinton Township, Venango County. Payton E. Dal, 18, of Osceola Mills, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to the Grove City Medical Center with minor injuries. She was cited for a lane violation.
