4:17 a.m. Wednesday — Stephen L. Cox, 35, of Oakland Township was arrested after he allegedly attempted to break into a home in the 300 block of American Avenue.Police were called after the home's occupants were awakened by the sound of someone trying to get inside. The couple said they found damage to the front door, which was propped open by a garden tool.Additionally, according to court documents, the furniture on the front porch had been pulled away from a window to provide access to the window. The screen to the window had been removed and the glass broken.On a side window, it appeared the suspect had tried to remove the air conditioning unit.The defendant left, documents said, but not before apparently telling the couple he was looking for someone named “George.” He was reportedly seen going into another nearby home on the same block. Officers later went there and found Cox, who appeared intoxicated.Cox was arrested and arraigned on a felony charge of trespass, a misdemeanor charge of loitering and prowling at night and summary charges of criminal mischief and public drunkenness. He is being held in the Butler County Prison on $15,000 bail.
Wednesday — Joseph W. Boyd, 33, of Middlesex Township was arrested on charges he illegally tried to buy a pistol from a Harrisville gun store earlier this year.Police allege Boyd lied on his application Feb. 14 to buy the firearm at Gun World on South Main Street. In completing a federal form required to buy the 40-caliber pistol, he denied having been convicted of a crime.But when his information was entered into the Pennsylvania Instant Check system, an automated system by which gun dealers can determine if someone can legally buy a gun in the state, he was denied the purchase due to a prior conviction for driving under the influence, court documents said.Police charged Boyd with unlawfully attempting to buy a firearm, a felony and unsworn falsification to authorities, a misdemeanor. He is free on his own recognizance.12:46 p.m. Sunday — Bryan A. Netz, 30, of Slippery Rock was hurt when he lost control of his sport utility vehicle, struck a ditch and overturned on Covert Road just east of West Liberty Road in Brady Township. Netz, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital with moderate injuries,Police said Netz was cited for driving too fast for conditions.
Monday — Justin E. Williams, 27, of Clarks Mills was arrested in connection with last month's burglary at a Sandy Lake Township business. The break-in at the Big Dog RC on Stoneboro Lateral Road happened July 17 or 18.Williams, who is also accused of a state parole violation, was arraigned on charges of burglary and theft. He was placed in the Mercer County Jail, following arraignment.12:20 a.m. July 20 — William Clepper, 59, of Freeport was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence at Franklin Hill Road and Hilltop Lane in East Franklin Township.
