Butler Police2:34 p.m. March 19 — Susan McKinnis, 60, of Butler Township lost control of her car around a bend in the 500 block of Morton Avenue and traveled onto the sidewalk, hitting a No Parking sign and utility pole.McKinnis was not hurt but her car had to be towed. The sign was damaged and knocked to the ground. The pole was apparently not damaged.
Butler Twp PoliceTuesday — Police filed two separate cases against Natasha S. Mathis, 39, of Butler stemming from a pair of false returns at the Walmart at Butler Commons.Mathis on March 19 allegedly stole merchandise valued at $73.14 and returned it for a store gift card. Three days later, police said, she is accused of committing a similar crime, this one involving an item valued at $157.94.She is charged with two counts of theft by deception.9:12 a.m. Monday — One person was hurt when vehicles driven by Ronald Gifford, 76, and Edward Rishel, 27, both of Butler collided at Hindman Road and K&L Lane.Rishel's passenger, who police did not identify, complained of pain after the wreck. A Butler Ambulance Service crew tended to the passenger, who refused further treatment.Both vehicles sustained minor damage.Thursday — Heather M. Musser, 31, of Connoquenessing Township allegedly under-rang merchandise, valued at $149, at the self-checkout at Butler Commons' Walmart. Musser is charged with retail theft.
Grove City PoliceTuesday — Police reported they are investigating the theft of a license plate on a utility trailer in the 500 block of West Main Street. Anyone with any information is asked to call police at 724-458-7925.
Slippery Rock University Police4:25 p.m. Thursday — Police arrested a university student and charged three others after getting a call for seven to eight people smoking marijuana in a wooded area behind a student housing facility on campus.One of the suspects, Dylan R. Harding, 18, of Pittsburgh took off running when officers got there, according to court documents. Police caught Harding after a 200-yard chase.A search, police said, turned up a baggie containing 34.8 grams of suspected marijuana, a digital scale, bong and marijuana grinder.Harding was arraigned on charges of possession with intent to deliver marijuana, a felony, and possession of a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He was placed in the Butler County Prison on $2,500 bail following arraignment.During their investigation, police said they also found a baggie of suspected marijuana and a marijuana grinder belonging to Garrett Lee Rieger, 19, of Allison Park, Allegheny County.Also, Tyler E. Hall, 18, of Zelienople had two baggies of suspected marijuana in his hand and Jamison G. Curtz, 19, of Cranberry Township had a marijuana grinder in his jacket pocket, documents said.Rieger is charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Hall is charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana. Curtz is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
State Police, Butler3:40 a.m. Monday — An escapee from a state prison prerelease center in Erie was caught with suspected heroin after being arrested in northern Butler County.Troopers nabbed Jerry Allen Higley, 24, at an apartment on Grove City Road in Mercer Township. Police had been looking for Higley since Sunday when he fled the Erie County Community Corrections Center.The center, operated by the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections' Bureau of Community Corrections, is a halfway house for state prison parolees re-entering society.State police from Erie notified troopers in Butler that they had information Higley was at the apartment in Mercer Township. Police arrested the suspect without incident.A search of a cigarette pack belonging to Higley, according to court documents, turned up six stamp bags of suspected heroin.He was arraigned on a misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance, and later placed in the Butler County Prison on $5,000 bail.Higley also is charged with escape, a felony, in Erie County.12:30 p.m. March 18 — Todd J. Volk, 36, of Lyndora allegedly left his two young children alone after dropping them off outside the Clearview Mall in Center Township, where his estranged wife was working inside.The children, ages 3 and 7, were not injured.Police said Volk drove to the mall and let the children get out of his vehicle onto the sidewalk. He told them he was going to find a parking space, according to court documents, but instead he “drove away and did not return.”The children were left unsupervised for about 10 minutes. They eventually found their mother in the store where she works.The investigating trooper said Volk and his wife are in the process of divorcing. He denied any wrongdoing.Volk is charged with two misdemeanor counts of child endangerment.
