Sexual assault trial begins

DNA key evidence in case involving vulnerable child

A DNA sample identifies a Prospect man, or one of his paternal relatives, as the most likely suspect in the sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl with autism last year, according to testimony in his jury trial Tuesday.

Alan Free, 62, is facing felony charges in Butler County Common Pleas Court of statutory sexual assault and aggravated indecent assault and misdemeanor charges of corruption of minors, endangering the welfare of children and indecent assault of a person less than 16. Butler Township police filed the charges following the alleged June 11, 2021, incident.

Judge Timothy McCune said the jury will begin deliberating Wednesday after testimony concludes.

Dinh Ut, a state police forensic scientist, testified that she analyzed swabs taken from the victim and compared them to Free’s DNA and found the DNA on some of the swabs matched Free or one of his male relatives.

She said one in 4,416 people have the same Y chromosome, and she compared the DNA to more than 13,000 other samples and did not find a match.

The external swab didn’t contain enough DNA to test, but the internal swab contained a Y chromosome from an unidentified male, Ut said.

The DNA sample from Free matched the DNA on that swab, she said.

Assistant District Attorney Benjamin Simon is prosecuting the case. Free is being represented by attorney Alexander Lindsay of Butler.

Free and the alleged victim’s mother had been longtime partners when the alleged incident took place, according to testimony from his preliminary hearing in June last year.
