Man accused of attempting to assault another man with chain saw in Butler

A Jefferson County man is accused of attempting to assault a man with a chain saw Monday, Aug. 17, in Butler.

Butler police charged Alan Richard Berkey, 37, Tuesday, Aug. 18, with felony aggravated assault following a report of a fight Monday night.

Police said they were dispatched to an unnamed street in Butler for reports of a fight involving a chain saw and other threats involving firearms and knives. Police were notified before they arrived on the scene a man was being held in a chokehold during a fight in the middle of the road.

The parties were separated when police arrived.

Police said they found a broken chain saw in the road. The man who was allegedly assaulted told police he was waiting outside a residence on his motorcycle when Berkey exited another residence and began yelling at him.

Police said Berkey then went back inside the residence, reemerged with a chain saw and began advancing toward the man. The man then jumped off his motorcycle and tackled Berkey, police said.

According to police, another man helped the get the chain saw away from Berkey.

Police said Berkey continued to threaten the man after the chain saw was taken.

Berkey is being held in Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. Aug. 31 before District Judge William Fullerton.
