Wednesday — Police charged Charles R. Hoffman, 35, of Slippery Rock with drunken and drugged driving stemming from a traffic stop at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 27 on East Cunningham Street near Main Street.Officers approached Hoffman and suspected he was impaired. Police said there were several empty beer cans in his pickup truck. A search of the truck also turned up several unused and used stamp bags of heroin, a small bag of marijuana, syringes and a spoon with heroin residue, a police report said.Hoffman was asked to do field sobriety tests but he claimed handicaps prevented him from completing them. Instead, he was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test.Toxicology reports showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.08 percent, which is the state's legal limit. He also tested positive for marijuana and metabolites of codeine and heroin, according to a police report.Hoffman is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, possession of a small amount of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, driving with a suspended license-DUI related and a license plate violation.Friday — John R. Kolakowski, 27, of Butler was charged with drugged driving after police found him passed out in his vehicle just after noon Aug. 28 at West New Castle and North Washington streets.When awakened by police, Kolakowski told them he had just completed a 14-hour work shift. But officers noticed his red, glassy eyes and slurred speech, according to a police report.He also had a knife in his pocket. When the officer reached to grab it, his arm bumped the center console, opening it and exposing syringes, the report said.Police searched Kolakowski's vehicle and found more than a dozen used and unused stamp bags of heroin, three syringes, and a spoon with suspected heroin residue.Subsequent toxicology results showed the suspect's blood tested positive for signs of heroin, cocaine and codeine, as well as a prescribed medication.In addition to driving under the influence of a controlled substance, Kolakowski is charged with possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.5:05 p.m. Sept. 25 — Kathy Jo Rensel, 51, of Butler was arrested after she allegedly shoplifted $127 worth of merchandise from the Kmart store at Pullman Square. Rensel, who has four convictions for shoplifting, was arraigned on a felony count of retail theft and placed in Butler County Prison on $2,500 bail.

Tuesday — Makensie S. Kellett, 19, of Grove City was charged with drunken driving stemming from an Aug. 31 crash on North Main Street Extension. Police said the teen lost control of a pickup truck and first hit a curb at the intersection of Beech Road.The pickup crossed all lanes and struck another curb and a concrete block on the opposite side of the road.Police said they found a set of brass knuckles and an opened bottle of whiskey inside the truck.Kellett is charged with driving under the influence, DUI by a minor, possessing a prohibited offensive weapon, driving with an open container of alcohol, driving with an expired registration, driving on the wrong side of the road and careless driving.

Sept. 19 — Police charged John A. McCaffrey, 23, of Connoquenessing with drugged driving stemming from a traffic stop at 3:54 p.m. Aug. 19 on Peters Road near Myoma Road.An officer approached McCaffrey's car and could smell burned marijuana, according to court documents. The suspect admitted he had a bowl of marijuana in the center console.He eventually failed field sobriety tests and was taken to UPMC Passavant Cranberry for a blood test. Toxicology reports later confirmed he had marijuana in his system.McCaffrey is charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, driving with a suspended license, and driving without insurance and without valid inspection.

4 p.m. Wednesday — A car driven by Jacob A. Coulter, 19, of Boyers rear-ended another car on Route 8 just north of Duffy Road in Brady Township. The collision forced the second car, driven by Dean W. King, 26, of Harrisville, into the back of a third car driven by Colleen M. Parker, 53, of Slippery Rock.King and Parker at the time were stopped for a school bus dropping off students. Police cited Coulter for careless driving.5:32 a.m. Tuesday — An unidentified man was hurt when the car he was driving sideswiped a tractor-trailer on Route 8 in Clay Township. Authorities said the man was southbound when he apparently crossed the center line and hit the rig that was traveling north.The man was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital with minor to moderate injuries.A police report was not available and the names of the drivers were not immediately known.West Sunbury and Unionville volunteer firefighters assisted at the scene.3:03 p.m. Monday — Amy Jo Snow, 28, of West Sunbury damaged Christopher Snow's vehicle at his home on Route 308 in Clay Township. The vehicle sustained about $200 in damage.Amy Snow is charged with criminal mischief. A police report did not indicate the relationship between the defendant and 38-year-old Christopher Snow.9:11 a.m. Monday — An Elk County woman was hurt when she lost control of her car and struck a utility pole along Route 8 just west of Roberts Lane in Mercer Township. Lyndsey M. Trumbull, 20, of Ridgway, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to Grove City Medical Center with minor injuries.Police cited Trumbull for disregarding traffic lanes.6:25 a.m. Monday — Donna Findley, 46, of Renfrew suffered a minor injury in a two-vehicle wreck in Penn Township. Findley, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital.The crash happened when the other driver, John P. Dudas, 71, of Sarver, pulled out of a parking lot on Route 8 at Kenyon Lane and was hit by the sport utility vehicle that Findley was driving.Police cited Dudas for improperly entering or crossing a road.Sept. 25 — Vincent Lee Nielsen, 45, of Butler Township was charged with threatening to shoot his brother and other family members in Clearfield Township on Sept. 3. Nielsen is charged with terroristic threats, harassment and disorderly conduct.Sept. 25 — A car was stolen from the driveway of a home in the 300 block of Main Street in Bruin. The car, a Mazda 3 belonging to a 22-year-old woman, was later found at an undisclosed location.

Wednesday — Four cowboy hats were among the items stolen in a burglary at a 40-year-old man's home on Route 68 in Madison Township. The break-in at the home and other buildings on the property happened between Sept. 22 and Wednesday.Along with the hats, the unknown burglar made off with three space heaters, two vehicle transmissions and a small chest filled with plastic beads.Anyone with information about the case is asked to call police at 814-226-1710.

5 p.m. Monday — Brittany E. Mitchell, 18, of Ford City allegedly shoplifted several clothing items at the Hilltop Plaza Walmart in East Franklin Township. She is accused of exchanging those same items for a store gift card. Police said Mitchell is charged with retail theft.1:30 p.m. Sunday — Jeffrey Hodgson, 48, of Kittanning was arrested after he allegedly assaulted a 46-year-old woman at a home on Quarry Road in North Buffalo Township. Hodgson was arraigned on charges of simple assault and harassment, and placed in the Armstrong County Jail on $5,000 bail.

1 p.m. Sept. 21 — Bessie Van Buren, 64, of Slippery Rock was hurt when the car she was driving collided with a sport utility vehicle that turned in front of her at Route 19 and Potter Run Road in Washington Township, Lawrence County.Van Buren and the other driver, Cory L. Shields, 24, of Pittsburgh, both suffered minor injuries. Both were wearing seat belts.Police cited Shields for careless driving.
