7:35 p.m. Wednesday — An unknown man tried to get into a car parked on the 300 block of Oak Street. The vehicle, it turned out, was occupied by the owner’s two adult children. The occupants had just returned home and the car was still running.

One occupant blew the horn when the man pulled on the back, driver’s side door handle. He left but immediately tried to get into a sport utility vehicle parked in front of the car. That vehicle, which is owned by the occupants’ father, was locked.

The suspect moments later got into a black Subaru driven by an unknown female, and left. The car was last seen headed north on Oak Street. Police checked the area but did not find the suspect or the getaway car.

The man is described as white, in his 30s or 40s, with a reddish, scruffy bread. He wore a gray knit cap and a brown coat.

Anyone with information is urged to call 911 and ask for Butler police.

Wednesday — Police charged an Allegheny County man in connection with a shoplifting incident earlier this month at the Butler Commons’ Walmart.

Michael J. Hutcheson, 32, of Verona on Dec. 7 allegedly tried to make off with a Dyson sweeper, a pair of slippers and a bag of salt. Store employees stopped him before he could leave with the merchandise, valued at $288.91, court documents said.

Hutcheson is charged with a misdemeanor count of retail theft and driving with a suspended license.

Dec. 13 — Sonya R. Winters, 46, of Lyndora was charged with bouncing two checks, each for $350, at Fast Track Financial on Route 8 south. The checks were issued June 14 and Aug. 14, and both were written on an account with insufficient funds, according to court documents.

Winters is charged with two counts of bad checks.

Wednesday — A blue 1994 Honda Civic was reported stolen from the front of a home on the 200 block of Park Street. The car was last seen by its owner about 7:25 p.m. Tuesday.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 724-458-7925.

Wednesday — Police are seeking the public’s help in trying to find a missing or lost passport. The passport, which belongs to a foreign exchange student from Malaysia, turned up missing Nov. 27 at Grove City College

Tuesday — Christine McCarthy, 49, of Harmony was arraigned on charges she forged her son’s signature on a check Oct. 4 that she used to pay for services at a hair salon on South Main Street. The check later bounced because of insufficient funds in the account.

Police said that during the investigation, McCarthy initially claimed her son knew about the circumstances of the check being returned. She later admitted that he was not aware of the check, according to court documents, and asked police if she could resolve the matter.

Eventually, police advised McCarthy to meet them at the station to discuss the case. She told them she would be there Nov. 15. She failed to appear or contact police any further, documents said.

She was arraigned on a felony charge of forgery and misdemeanor charges of theft of services, identity theft and bad checks. She was released on her own recognizance following arraignment.

Tuesday — David G. Hunter IV, 27, of Cranberry Township was arraigned on charges he illegally tried to buy a handgun in May at a Butler Township gun store.

Police said Hunter allegedly provided false information on a federal form that was required May 5 when he attempted to buy a 9 mm pistol at Down Range Supply on Route 68.

When his information was entered into the Pennsylvania Instant Check system, an automated system by which gun dealers can determine if someone can legally buy a gun in the state, he was denied the purchase.

Hunter was arraigned on charges of unlawfully attempting to buy a firearm, a felony, and unsworn falsification to authorities, a misdemeanor. He was released on his own recognizance following arraignment.

Monday — Cruz D. Roy, 35, of Butler was charged with being more than three times the legal limit for alcohol in connection with a one-vehicle wreck Sept. 23 in Summit Township. He was hurt, police said, when he lost control of his car about 10:30 p.m. and struck an embankment on Route 422 east at the Mitchell Hill Road exit.

While speaking to Roy in the ambulance, according to court documents, police said he admitted drinking alcohol earlier that night. He also acknowledged that he was driving too fast.

A Butler Ambulance Service crew took him to Butler Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries and for a blood draw. The blood was later tested and found that Roy’s blood-alcohol level was 0.243 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.

Roy is charged with driving under the influence, driving at an unsafe speed, careless driving, disregarding traffic lanes, driving at an unsafe speed, driving without insurance and not wearing a seat belt.

Monday — Adam J. Farren, 29, of Butler was charged with drugged driving stemming from a traffic stop last month in Slippery Rock Township. Police said they pulled him over about 10:05 p.m. Nov. 15 for crossing the center line on Cameron Drive several times.

The car smelled of marijuana, according to court documents, and police noticed an orange pill container with a “large marijuana bud” inside it.

Farren failed field sobriety tests and he admitted to having smoked marijuana several hours before driving. He was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test. Toxicology results showed he had marijuana and fentanyl in his system.

He is charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and disregarding traffic lanes.

Dec. 14 — Terrell J. Novak, 19, of West Sunbury was charged with illegally trying to buy a rifle in August at a Cherry Township gun store.

Police said Novak provided false information on a federal form that was required Aug. 3 when he attempted to purchase a Ruger AR-15 at Snyder X Guns on Pry Road.

When Novak’s information was entered into the Pennsylvania Instant Check system, an automated system by which gun dealers can determine if someone can legally buy a gun in the state, he was denied the purchase.

He is charged with unsworn falsification to authorities, a misdemeanor.

12:56 a.m. Dec. 8 — Joshua I. Eiler, 35, of Brady Township was arrested for registering more than double the legal limit for alcohol in his blood after being stopped while driving his pickup truck without using headlights at Hall Road and Lilac Lane in Brady Township.

Police said they suspected Eiler had been drinking and they learned he did not have a valid driver’s license. He failed field sobriety testing and was taken to the Slippery Rock University police station for a breath test.

The test indicated his blood-alcohol level was 0.163 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.

Eiler is charged with driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license-DUI related, driving under suspension with a blood-alcohol level of 0.02 percent or greater, careless driving and a lighting violation.

[naviga:h3]State Police, Kittanning[/naviga:h3]

11:46 p.m. Saturday — A sport utility vehicle driven by David E. Gallaher, 24, of Kittanning struck a tree along North Wible Road in East Franklin Township.

Gallaher told police the accident happened when he swerved to avoid a deer and skidded off the road on ice. He was not hurt but his vehicle had to be towed.

Police cited him for driving too fast for conditions and disregarding traffic lanes.

[naviga:h3]State Police, Mercer[/naviga:h3]

6:03 p.m. Monday — A pickup truck driven by Steven Murray, 45, of Harrisville collided with a sport utility vehicle in Pine Township, Mercer County.

Police said the accident happened when Murray pulled out from Republic Street and hit the SUV driven by Kelly J. Kaza, 39, of West Middlesex. No one was injured. Kaza’s vehicle had to be towed.

Murray was cited for improperly entering or crossing a road and not wearing a seat belt.
