Butler PoliceFriday — Police charged Stanley Williams, 60, of Butler with misdemeanor drug possession stemming from a traffic stop about 1:55 a.m. Feb. 22 on the 200 block of East Brady Street, just east of North Cliff Street.Williams was pulled over after a patrol officer spotted his vehicle leaking motor fluid. The officer also reported smelling a strong odor of gasoline coming from the car as he followed it.Police said that after stopping the car, they learned Williams had a suspended driver’s license. Later, while conducting an inventory of the suspect’s car, police found a stamp bag of what they believe is heroin next to the driver’s seat, court documents said.Williams is charged with possession of a controlled substance and driving with a suspended license-DUI related.3:52 p.m. Feb. 18 — John D. McCurdy, 63, of Butler was caught allegedly shoplifting $10 in merchandise from the Rite Aid store on South Main Street. McCurdy, who has one prior shoplifting arrest, is charged with misdemeanor retail theft.
Butler Twp Police4:33 p.m. Tuesday — Two people were hurt in a three-vehicle wreck on Route 8 at Belmont Road.The crash happened when John Black, 80, of Butler was unable to stop his pickup truck in time and hit the back of a minivan that was stopped in traffic. The collision pushed the van, driven by Robert Selfridge, 57, of Butler, into a car driven by Sara S. Channapati, 66, of Butler.Selfridge, his passenger and Channapati were all taken to Butler Memorial Hospital with unspecified injuries. All three vehicles had to be towed and northbound traffic was detoured around the crash site for about 30 minutes.
Middlesex Twp Police11:58 p.m. Tuesday — Susan M. McDermott, 51, of Sarver was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence after a one-car crash on the 400 block of Glade Mill Road.Police said McDermott lost control of her car while traveling east. The vehicle crossed over the westbound lane and went off the road, hitting an embankment before becoming airborne. The car, which landed on its wheels, ended in a field about 100 yards off the road.McDermott, who police suspected was impaired, was taken to UPMC Passavant for a blood test. The test showed her blood-alcohol level was 0.185 percent, according to police, more than twice the state’s 0.08 percent legal limit.Middlesex Township and Saxonburg volunteer firefighters assisted police.Tuesday — Police reported that they are investigating the theft of a .380-caliber pistol that was stolen from a home on Terra Drive. The owner said the handgun was taken within the past month.Police said they have a suspect, who they would not identify. The theft investigation continues.Tuesday — Laura M. Rice, 53, was charged in connection with a suspected heroin overdose Friday at her home on Countryside Drive.A call from an acquaintance at the house sent police and a crew from Quality Ambulance there. Rice was later taken to Butler Memorial Hospital. Police said they found an empty stamp bag of suspected heroin and a syringe at the home.Rice is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
State Police, ButlerTuesday — Police charged Devin R. Haley, 21, of Fairview Township in connection with a weekend fight at the Uni-Mart parking lot on Jamison Street in Petrolia.Haley is accused of antagonizing and threatening another man, 25-year-old Cody T. Pyle of Chicora, who had walked to the store Saturday. Later, the defendant punched Pyle, according to court documents.After Pyle fell to the ground, Haley allegedly kicked him. When Ryan T. Smith, 27, of Chicora intervened and tried to help Pyle, Haley punched Smith, documents said. The suspect fled.Haley is charged with two counts each of simple assault and harassment, as well as disorderly conduct.8:21 p.m. Monday — Ames M. Livingston, 38, of Tallahassee, Fla., was arrested for suspected drunken driving in Butler Township.Police initially were called for a Jeep that was seen “driving in circles” at the Family Bowlaway on Fairground Hill in the township, according to court documents. A short time later, a patrol trooper spotted the Jeep on West New Castle Road “weaving from center line to berm line.”The officer stopped the vehicle in a parking lot behind a restaurant at the Butler Commons shopping plaza. Livingston, who smelled of alcohol and appeared impaired, was taken to the barracks for a breath test. The test, however, was stopped after the suspect was unable to provide a proper sample, documents said.Livingston later refused to submit to a blood test after being taken to Butler Memorial Hospital.He was arraigned on charges of driving under the influence, driving an unregistered vehicle, disregarding traffic lanes, careless driving and not wearing a seat belt. Livingston was placed in Butler County Prison on $5,000 bail following arraignment.3:58 p.m. Feb. 25 — Joyce M. Anderson, 43, of Jefferson Township was arrested after she was seen stuffing meat into her purse at the Giant Eagle store at Clearview Mall in Center Township. An employee stopped her before she left the store with the four strip steaks worth nearly $95.Anderson, who has two prior shoplifting arrests, was arraigned on a felony count of retail theft. She was placed in Butler County Prison on $5,000 bail following arraignment.
State Police, Kittanning7:02 a.m. Wednesday — Angela E. Fiorita, 34, of Templeton lost control of her car and crossed the center line, sideswiping a pickup truck and hitting a sport utility vehicle on Route 28 about one-half mile north of Sloan Hill Road in Rayburn Township.A police report noted the icy road conditions and Fiorita was not cited in the accident.Scott K. McLaughlin, 54, of Kittanning was driving the pickup and Lacy A. Reedy, 17, of Templeton was driving the SUV.6:46 a.m. Wednesday — Lindsay R. Green, 32, of Worthington was hurt when she swerved her SUV to avoid several other vehicles stopped in traffic and crashed over an embankment on ice-and snow-covered Route 268 in Sugarcreek Township.Police said the vehicle rolled onto its passenger side before the roof hit a tree. Green, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to ACMH Hospital in East Franklin Township with minor injuries.Wednesday — Police reported they are investigating the theft of a UPS package that was mistakenly delivered to the wrong home in Pine Township, Armstrong County.The victim, a 61-year-old Templeton woman, told police she had ordered an Xbox video game console through Fingerhut last year. But the UPS delivery man on Dec. 14 took it to the wrong address.The homeowner, in turn, gave the package to the suspected thief, an unknown woman who showed up at the house asking if it had been delivered there by mistake.Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call police at 724-543-2011.
State Police, New Castle6:59 a.m. Tuesday — One person was hurt when Rip R. Straessley, 29, of Cranberry Township lost control of his car and crashed into another car on Route 422 just west of McConnells Mill Road in Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County.The other driver, Maedell L. Keller, 47, of New Castle, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to Jameson Hospital in New Castle with minor injuries. Police cited Straessley with driving at an unsafe speed.9:30 p.m. Monday — A reported stolen box truck was found on Route 388 just south of Route 422 in Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County. The 2003 Ford F-450 earlier had been reported stolen to West Deer Township police in Allegheny County.Sunday — An unknown vandal damaged numerous traffic signs on County Line Road at Hunt and Boak roads in Scott Township. The signs, owned by the state Department of Transportation, were damaged Saturday or Sunday.
