Butler Police3:45 p.m. Sunday — A pickup truck driven by John J. Ship, 18, of Butler Township struck a utility pole along Morten Avenue. The pole sustained minor damage.6:15 p.m. Thursday — Laura Lee McGaughey, 33, of Butler was arrested after a disturbance call led to an altercation with police in the 300 block of Mercer Street.Police were initially called after McGaughey allegedly showed up on a couple’s front porch and started screaming profanities and threats. But by the time officers got there, the suspect was gone. Police found her walking on Maryland Avenue.While being questioned, according to court documents, she screamed her responses to the officer. When the officer told her to stop shouting, she began using profanities.Police said moments after she tried to walk away, she was arrested. Still, documents said, she tried to get away even after the officer grabbed her left arm.McGaughey was led to a patrol car but she continued to pull away. The officer took the women to the ground and called for backup. While on the ground, police said, she rolled over and tried to get away.She was eventually arraigned on misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest, defiant trespass and harassment and a summary charge of disorderly conduct, and released on her own recognizance.2:55 p.m. Thursday — Michael D. Burrows, 30, of Penn Hills, Allegheny County, was arrested after he led police on a short chase that started after he did not pull over for a traffic stop on Franklin Street.A patrol officer tried to stop Burrows after spotting the suspect’s Mercedes-Benz sport utility vehicle with an expired inspection sticker. But instead of stopping, he continued driving, turning left onto East Penn Street, court documents said.He made another left turn onto one-way East Walnut Street, and traveled east on the westbound road. With the patrol car’s emergency lights on, the officer continued to pursue the suspect onto East Brady Street.At the intersection of East Brady and North Monroe streets, the officer activated his siren. The chase reached speeds of 50 mph, twice the posted speed limit, onto First Street, Spruce Street and School Street, where Burrows finally stopped.Burrows was arraigned on a misdemeanor charge of fleeing or attempting to elude police and summary charges of reckless driving and driving a vehicle without valid inspection. He was released on his own recognizance following arraignment.
Butler Twp Police4 p.m. Sunday — An unknown driver did not stop after hitting the back of a car on Route 8 south just north of Greater Butler Mart. Amanda K. Platt, 26, of Butler was driving the car. The suspected hit-and-run vehicle is a red, full-size pickup truck.Anyone with information about the wreck is asked to call police at 724-285-9600. A police report noted that Platt was cited for driving with a suspended license.1:52 a.m. Sunday — Stephen Chaff, 48, of Butler was arrested on felony assault and other charges after allegedly attacking his wife during a domestic dispute at their home on Grandview Boulevard.The suspected beating left the woman with a severely swollen face, bruises to the eyes and shoulders and redness around her neck and chest, police said. She later sought treatment at Butler Memorial Hospital.Chaff is accused of punching his wife while holding her down on the floor. She eventually managed to get away and seek help at a neighbor’s house.The defendant was arraigned on charges of aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment, and placed in the Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail.5:22 p.m. Saturday — A 17-year-old girl lost control of her car on snow- and ice-slick Old Plank Road and struck a traffic sign and a landscaped area near the South Butler Volunteer Fire Department. Her vehicle ended up on an embankment.The girl, who police did not identify, was cited for driving too fast for conditions.4:02 p.m. Saturday — A vehicle driven by Joan Kalnik, 61, of Ford City, Armstrong County hit a curb and traveled down a 10-foot embankment on ice-covered McQuistion Road at Hillvue Drive. Kalnik was not injured or cited in the accident.3:12 p.m. Saturday — Charles Burgess Jr., 23, of Hilliards was arrested after he allegedly made repeated telephone calls and Facebook posts about shooting a 23-year-old woman who lives on East Jefferson Street in the township.Burgess was arraigned on charges of terroristic threats and harassment, and placed in the Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail.1:13 p.m. Friday — James A. Kemple, 49, of Butler was hurt when the vehicle he was driving rear-ended another vehicle on Route 422 West. Kemple suffered a minor injury. Paul Garcia, 67, of Butler was the other driver.1:05 p.m. Friday — Julie Cranmer, 47, of Petrolia suffered a minor leg injury when her vehicle rear-ended another vehicle on New Castle Road hill near Barracks Road. Linda Wyant, 67, of Parker was the other driver.
State Police, Butler9:50 a.m. Monday — An Erie woman told police she heard a “popping noise” moments before she lost control of her car and crashed over a hillside along Route 8 in Clay Township. Catharyn N. Burton, 21, was neither injured nor cited in the accident.5:15 p.m. Sunday — A car driven by Ellen N. Pierson, 21, of Clarksburg, Md., struck a guardrail and spun 360 degrees on Interstate 79 in Muddy Creek Township.3:40 p.m. Sunday — A car driven by Caitlyn J. Cottrill, 22, of Allison Park, Allegheny County, collided with another car after fishtailing on I-79 in Muddy Creek Township. Cottrill’s car spun into the median between the northbound and southbound lanes.Police cited Cottrill for driving at an unsafe speed. Jason Janus, 35, of Vernon, N.J., was the other driver.3:08 p.m. Sunday — A Lawrence County woman was going too fast when her car fishtailed out of control and spun into a guardrail on I-79 in Jackson Township. Gabrielle L. Reed, 20, of Volant was cited for driving at an unsafe speed.12:55 p.m. Thursday — One person was hurt when a sport utility vehicle driven by Stacey A. Glenn, 32, of Hilliards rear-ended a car on Route 308 in Center Township. The other driver, Susan A. Stoepfel, 47, of Mercer, was stopped while waiting to turn left onto Aggas Road.Stoepfel, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered unknown injuries. She was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital. Police said Glenn was cited for following too closely to another vehicle.
State Police, Mercer10 p.m. Sunday — An icy road was blamed for Karen J. Marley, 55, of Mercer losing control of her sport utility vehicle before hitting a tree along Route 58 just west of Glenora Drive in Pine Township, Mercer County.
