Name of man killed in Friday morning 25-vehicle pileup along I-79 released
The Butler County coroner’s office has released the name of the person who died following crashes Friday morning along an icy stretch of Interstate 79 in Jackson Township.
According to the coroner’s office, 18-year-old Evan Gingo, of Pittsburgh, died Friday morning as a result of the crashes. At least 25 vehicles were involved in the crashes and another 20 motorists were disabled. between the Zelienople and Evans City exits along the interstate.
Nine people were taken to hospitals with injuries, but the severity of the injuries was not known, police said.
The crashes were reported just after 10:15 a.m. in the northbound lane at mile marker 84 in Jackson Township, according to Butler County Emergency Services. The lanes in both directions were described as a “sheet of ice.”
The accidents are under investigation, police said.
The state Department of Transportation closed the northbound and southbound lanes of the interstate between Exit 83, the Evans City exit, and Exit 88, the Zelienople/Route 68 exit.
In addition, PennDOT lowered the speed limit on I-79 between Erie and Butler to 45 mph, and commercial vehicles were restricted to the right lane.
Police said the interstate would be closed for several hours while they investigate.
According to emergency services dispatch, the interstate was reopened as of about 3:45 p.m.
