Plaisted is charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

Thursday — Police reported that they are seeking the unknown person who damaged a car with a shopping cart last week at the Clearview Mall in Center Township.

The vandal struck a light blue Chevrolet Cruze with the cart and then drove away in a blue Volkswagen Golf hatchback, according to a police report. The case of suspected criminal mischief happened about 2:30 p.m. June 22 in the parking lot outside the Rural King store.

The Chevy, owned by a 64-year-old Pittsburgh man, sustained damage to the rear driver’s side quarter panel.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 724-284-8100.

Monday — Earl E. Kelly II, 66, of Clearfield Township was charged with suspected drunken driving in connection with an incident in April that began at a Clearfield Township bar.

Police began investigating the case about 9:45 p.m. April 8 after being called to Butler Memorial Hospital, where Kelly was being treated for injuries

He claimed he was injured after being attacked by two unknown people after walking outside the County Line Tavern, according to court documents.

Police inspected the injuries, which did not appear to have been suffered in an assault. While speaking to Kelly, a trooper also smelled alcohol on his breath, police said.

Later that night, documents said, police came upon a crash site on the 2800 block of Old Route 422 east in Clearfield Township. It appeared the car had been traveling west when it crossed over the eastbound lane and struck two trees.

There was no one around the wrecked car, documents said. The car’s license plate identified Kelly as the owner.

Police returned to the hospital and spoke to Kelly. After being confronted, documents said, he admitted he had been driving the car after drinking at the bar. He allegedly made up the assault to cover up the crash.

Kelly was eventually taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh for further medical treatment.

In addition to driving under the influence, he is charged with failing to immediately notify police of an accident, driving at an unsafe speed, careless driving, failing to keep right and a seat belt violation.
