4:02 p.m. Saturday — Jason R. Monks, 32, of Butler was allegedly caught with nearly a dozen bags of suspected heroin after he was arrested on a bench warrant on South Main Street.

Police said they found Monks in a car parked under the General Butler Bridge, near West Quarry Street. Police Lt. Brian Grooms stopped to check the vehicle and found that its inspection was expired, according to court documents.

When Grooms identified Monks, he learned that the defendant’s license was suspended. He also found out that Monks was wanted on a warrant.

Police later searched the suspect’s car and turned up 10 stamp bags of suspected heroin in the cup holder, documents said. In Monks’ wallet, police found three empty bags of suspected heroin and a piece of a straw.

Monks was arraigned on charges of possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, driving with a suspended license and driving a vehicle without valid inspection.

He was placed in Butler County Prison on the warrant, court records showed, which was issued April 1, 2016, after he failed to appear for a probation violation hearing in a 2011 driving under the influence case.

Monday — Police issued a warning to be on the alert of a suspected reshipping scam that recently targeted a resident on the 200 block of South Duffy Street.

The Internet confidence crime, according to a police report, involves a scammer posing as a member of a dating website or similar service.

The scammer, who claims to be out of the country due to work, at some point ships various items to the victim and asks him or her to repackage and reship those items to a different address.

Police said the items were initially purchased with stolen credit card numbers.

“Be careful of anyone you have not met in person asking you to ship or mail items to you,” according to the police advisory.

Authorities advise victims to file a complaint with the FBI through its Internet crime complaint center at www.ic3.gov.

April 27 — Police charged a Pittsburgh teenager with drugged driving stemming from a traffic stop in Brady Township. James C. Alverson, 18, was pulled over about 1 a.m. April 14 for having an obscured license plate on Route 8.

Troopers said they smelled marijuana when they got to the teen’s sport utility vehicle. He also appeared to be impaired. He admitted smoking marijuana “four hours ago,” according to court documents.

Alverson also acknowledged that he had marijuana in a bag that police found in the rear back cargo area, documents said. Also in the bag was an electric scale, marijuana grinder, two glass smoking pipes, a bong and other contraband.
