12:40 a.m. Friday — Police arrested a Colorado man for allegedly being more than twice the state’s legal limit for alcohol following a traffic stop at South Main and Diamond streets.

The suspect, Jess J. Riele, 41, of Steamboat Springs, was stopped for driving without his headlights on, according to court documents. Police said they smelled a “strong odor” of alcohol coming from Riele and he admitted having “a couple” of alcoholic beverages.

He was arrested after failing field sobriety tests and was taken for a breath test, which showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.196 percent. In Pennsylvania, a level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated.

Riele was arraigned on charges of driving under the influence and the lighting violation, and later placed in the Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail.

Officers found Penrod sleeping in the truck’s driver’s seat, according to court documents. Police awakened him after knocking on the window and pulling on the door handle. The inside of the pickup reeked of alcohol, police said.

Penrod admitted he had been drinking beer that night. Officers asked him how many. “I had plenty,” he replied, documents said.

Police said they began but stopped field sobriety tests due to the defendant’s impairment. A breath test subsequently showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.164 percent. He is charged with DUI.
