12:09 a.m. Sunday — Daniel J. McCall-Bellis, 28, of Butler was arrested for drunken driving only minutes after a suspected hit-and-run crash at West Cunningham and Pillow streets.
Police suspect McCall-Bellis drove away after his car about 11:55 p.m. Saturday struck another vehicle that was making a turn at the intersection. The other driver provided police with a description of the suspect’s car.
Fourteen minutes later, according to court documents, police spotted the car on Pillow Street near Third Avenue. A traffic stop was made and officers soon suspected the defendant had been drinking.
McCall-Bellis was arrested after failing field sobriety tests. But before police could put him in handcuffs, he tried to run. He didn’t get far.
A breath test at the police station showed his blood-alcohol was 0.189 percent, documents said, more than double the state’s 0.08 percent legal limit. A search also turned up suspected marijuana and a metal smoking pipe in one of his pants’ pockets.
District Judge Sue Haggerty arraigned the suspect on charges of driving under the influence, possession of a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest, hit-and-run, driving with a suspended license and driving a vehicle without valid inspection.
He was placed in the Butler County Prison on $3,000 bail following arraignment.
12:46 a.m. Dec. 27 — Phillip C. Phillips, 28, was arrested after he allegedly attacked his girlfriend, Colleen Wells, during a domestic dispute at their home in the 400 block of West North Street.
Wells told police she was sleeping when the defendant awakened her because he was upset “over not being able to find a movie in the apartment,” court documents said. He also was angry that there was no beer or drugs in the house, according to a police affidavit.
Phillips is accused of pulling the victim out of the bed and dragging her by the hair across the kitchen floor. He also allegedly hit her and threw her against the kitchen wall before he tried to strangle the woman.
Wells tried to call 911 but the suspect snatched away her cell phone, documents said. He also allegedly threatened to kill her and her family.
District Judge Sue Haggerty arraigned Phillips on charges of aggravated assault, terroristic threats and simple assault. He later was placed in the Butler County Prison on $25,000 bail.

Sunday — The state police fire marshal’s office ruled that last week’s blaze that damaged a detached garage in Connoquenessing Township was accidental.

Trooper David Jungling, a deputy fire marshal, estimated the damage at $50,000. A news release did not say how the fire started. The Prospect Volunteer Fire Department, however, previously said that it appeared the fire started on a work bench.

Rankin, 54, of Emlenton, a passenger in the other vehicle, a pickup truck, was taken to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh with life-threatening injuries.
The wreck happened when Deighan pulled his car into the intersection and into the path of the truck that Pauline M. Rankin, 60, of Emlenton was driving.
Police said their investigation continues. The Prospect VFD assisted at the scene.
