Butler Police6:10 p.m. Monday — John D. Locke, 54, of Butler ended up at Butler Memorial Hospital after suffering an apparent heroin overdose on Memorial Drive.Locke was unresponsive when emergency crews found him but medics revived him using the heroin antidote Narcan. Police also smelled a “strong odor” of alcohol on his breath.A Butler Ambulance Service crew later took him to the hospital for further treatment. Police cited Locke for public drunkenness.1:02 p.m. Monday — A car driven by Lynn C. Deal, 61, of Butler ran a stop sign and collided with another car at West Penn and North Bluff streets. Police cited Deal for the stop sign violation. Marilyn J. Marbell, 59, of Butler was the other driver.

Butler Twp Police4:34 p.m. Monday — Keith A. Wellman, 34, of Renfrew allegedly tried to pull a refund scam at the Kohl's store at the Butler Crossing shopping plaza. Police said he placed items valued at $50 in a plastic bag and tried to return the merchandise for a refund.Officers later searched him and found a used stamp bag of suspected heroin. Wellman is charged with theft by deception and possession of drug paraphernalia.3:27 p.m. Monday — A vehicle driven by Douglas E. Smaretsky, 55, of Lyndora veered into oncoming traffic and collided with another car on North Eberhart Road. He was treated at the scene for minor injuries.Police cited Smaretsky for careless driving, failing to keep right, driving a vehicle without valid inspection and not wearing a seat belt. Joseph Dryna, 29, of Zelienople was the other driver.2:06 p.m. Aug. 10 — William D. Makuta, 60, of Butler was arrested for driving under the influence at the Bon Aire shopping plaza. Police said they found him “highly intoxicated” in a vehicle in the parking lot.Charging documents noted the arrest was Makuta's third drunken driving offense. In addition to DUI, he is with driving with a suspended license and driving without a license.

State Police, Butler4:26 p.m. Tuesday — Two people were hurt in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 79 in Jackson Township. Christopher F. Ames, 41, of Natrona Heights, Allegheny County, one of the drivers, was taken to UPMC Passavant Cranberry with moderate injuries.Ames was traveling the on-ramp at exit 83 and attempting to enter the southbound lanes on I-79 when his sport utility vehicle collided with a car driven by Clarence C. Reiner Jr., 77, of Pittsburgh. The two vehicles spun out on impact and both hit a another car driven by Jeanne L. Manko, 48, of Pittsburgh.Manko, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered minor injuries. Ames was not wearing a seat belt. Police cited Ames for failing to yield and for the seat belt violation.7:50 a.m. Tuesday — A woman was hurt when she lost control of her car and struck a tree along Frazier Road about one-quarter mile off Dinnerbell Road in Jefferson Township.The woman, whose name was not immediately known, was in the car when rescuers got there, authorities said. She was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital with unknown injuries.Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company and Saxonburg EMS assisted. A police report was not available this morning.7:12 a.m. Tuesday — A Crawford County man lost control of his pickup truck and rolled over on Interstate 79 just south of Sawyer Road in Muddy Creek Township. The crash happened when William V. Palombo, 52, of Cochranton locked on his brakes to avoid colliding with another vehicle that was sliding in front of him on the wet road. The pickup spun out and hit a guardrail. Palombo was not hurt but his truck had to be towed away.Tuesday — Police charged Amanda E. Ristity, 34, of Butler with trying to cash a check July 13 that had previously been reported stolen from a home at Brady Hills Estates in Brady Township. She is charged with receiving stolen property, access device fraud and attempted access device fraud.Monday — A thief stole a Beaver County man's boat motor while it was at Bob Warren's Boats Sales on Route 38 in Summit Township. The theft happened between 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Monday. The stolen property is a black, Mercury 20-horsepower motor.3:07 a.m. Aug. 2 — William R. Dingel, 20, of East Butler was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence on East Walnut Street in Butler. Police also found Dingel with suspected drugs.

State Police, Mercer9:30 a.m. Monday — A burglar was caught but managed to get away after breaking into a home in Worth Township, Mercer County. Police believe the suspect — a white man about 40 years-old — was looking to steal copper wires and pipes in the house in the 1300 block of Kilgore Road.An alert neighbor confronted the man at the home and asked to know if he had the owner's permission to be there. The suspect immediately got into his car and drove away.The witness described the getaway vehicle as an older model, blue car that was possibly missing a grill. Police said the vehicle was last seen traveling east into Venango County on Georgetown Road.
