Kitchen in dorm damaged
SLIPPERY ROCK — No one was injured Thursday night when a pan of grease caught fire in a dormitory building kitchen at Slippery Rock University.
“The sprinkler system pretty much took care of it,” said Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Department Chief Dave Taggart.
The fire started around 8:16 p.m. when some students were cooking in a community kitchen in Building F, Taggart said. The students left the kitchen and the door locked behind them. A pan of grease caught fire and the building was evacuated.
It was not immediately known how many students live in the building.
In addition to Slippery Rock, firefighters from Harrisville and Unionville responded, but Taggart said the sprinkler system took care of much of the work and the departments cleared the scene in about an hour.
He estimated about $10,000 worth of damage was done. However, the residents were able to return to their rooms. Taggart said university maintenance already was on site when the fire departments left.
“They will need a new kitchen,” Taggart said.
