Police: Stolen shotgun found while investigating fireworks complaint

An Adams Township man is facing multiple charges after police say they found a firearm reported stolen in his home while investigating a report of fireworks being set off near juveniles.

John Paul Muska, 64, was charged Friday, Oct. 9, with felony receiving stolen property and one misdemeanor count each of reckless endangerment, controlled substance possession, drug paraphernalia possession and DUI following an incident the previous day.

Adams Township police were dispatched at 5:43 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, to the 1000 block of Mars-Evans City Road. The caller reported a neighbor, identified as Muska, was setting off fireworks near two juveniles. The fireworks allegedly left a “crater” in the grass and pieces of cardboard from its packaging.

Officers questioned Muska, who denied setting off fireworks and said he was cooking dinner when the explosion occurred. Police subsequently served a search warrant for the residence, shed, yard and vehicles.

While searching the residence, officers located a Remington shotgun in a cabinet in the garage. According to police, after securing the firearm, officers conducted a serial number check, which confirmed it was reported stolen in Pittsburgh.

Muska had left the area while the search warrant was executed. Police later spotted him driving and conducted a traffic stop.

During a search of the vehicle, officers found a paper bag containing a cigarette pack with two glass smoking pipes that had burned residue on them, police said. While at the station, police said Muska admitted to smoking crack cocaine and setting off the fireworks.

Police also spoke with the two juveniles reported to be near the fireworks. Both said they heard a loud explosion and saw smoke coming from the area, according to police.

Muska is being held in Butler County Prison on $25,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Oct. 21 before District Judge Amy Marcinkiewicz.
