No decision on senior sites
Butler County Commissioner Dale Pinkerton on Wednesday said no decisions have been made in talks about possibly consolidating some of the county’s 10 senior centers.
But fellow commissioner Jim Eckstein seemed to disagree, saying during the board’s Wednesday meeting that “there’s a pattern” in the county of officials saying they are exploring something, when that means it’s a done deal “by a 2 to 1 vote.”
Citing attendance issues, Beth Herold, administrator of the county Area Agency on Agency, has previously said the agency is considering a plan to have two centers: at the Cranberry Township Municipal Center and a new site in Butler as main hubs with rural centers being open three days a week. Buses would take seniors to the hub sites.
A survey was sent to seniors last month, and officials have said there’s no deadline to make a decision.
Herold, who could not be reached for comment Wednesday, has been visiting each of the centers to talk about the proposed changes. Eckstein, apparently, also has been making a round of visits to each of the centers.
He said he was garnering input from the residents.
But Pinkerton said Eckstein’s visits were to incite fear and “bad mouth” Herold.
“Shame on you, Jim,” Pinkerton said.
In response, Eckstein said Pinkerton was inaccurate in his representation.
“Dale can say whatever he wants, and I’m not able to rebut it,” Eckstein said. “It’s a lie.”
The discussion started during the meeting when Eckstein read a letter from a woman who attends the senior center in Evans City, and opposed losing that site. The topic was not an agenda item at the meeting, and no vote was taken.
The commissioners also approved the submission of a $64,000 state grant request to develop a 20-by-40-foot shade shelter for Jade’s Dog Park in Alameda Park.
