Man allegedly throws lit shoe, starts a fire

He is charged with arson

A man is accused of throwing a lit shoe into his ex-girlfriend’s home in Butler and starting a fire.

The alleged victim returned in time June 14 and put out the fire at her duplex in the 200 block of East Brady Street, Butler police said. No one was hurt.

District Judge Pete Shaffer on Tuesday issued an arrest warrant for the suspect, Anthony Lee Harris, 22, no known address, on arson and other charges.

The defendant’s former girlfriend, Shannon Pope, told police that Harris had been at her home earlier in the day June 14 to drop off their son, according to court documents.

She said he began banging on the door. When she didn’t answer right away, she recounted, he got angry and smashed out a window next to the door.

Pope ran out of the house, grabbed her son and left, fearing for her safety, documents said.

Later, a little after 8 p.m., she returned home and found the door open. She noticed a fire on the floor just inside the doorway.

She extinguished the fire with flour, police said.

Officers got there shortly before 8:30 p.m. and noticed a burned shoe covered in flour on the floor. Police believe the shoe was the source of the fire.

It was not known how Harris allegedly set the shoe on fire.

Pope told police she had previously left the shoe on the porch at the door prior to Harris getting there.

The defendant is charged with arson, a felony, and simple assault, a misdemeanor.
