Freeport softball surprises Southmoreland

Sydney Selker struck out 11 in seven innings as 12th-seeded Freeport surprised No. 5 seed Southmoreland, 6-3, in WPIAL Class 3A softball playoff action Tuesday at Gateway High School.

Addy Caruso homered for the Yellowjackets (11-6), who won their third straight game and sixth of their last seven. Megan Grolemund hit a triple for the winners.

Selker doubled and singled, Abby DeJidas had a pair of singles and Jayme Radvan singled for Freeport.

Maddie Brown struck out 15 in seven innings for Southmoreland (14-3). She allowed no walks. Zoey Welling had a pair of singles, but Southmoreland saw its five-game winning streak snapped.

The Yellowjackets return to action Thursday, playing the Mohawk-Waynesburg Central survivor at a site and time to be determined.

Boys Lacrosse

Seneca Valley’s season ended with an 11-6 WPIAL Class 3A playoff loss at Peters Township. No details were available.
