Board awards bids for project

Municipal building is being renovated

CRANBERRY TWP — The board of supervisors Thursday night awarded four bids totaling more than $3 million for a project to renovate the municipal building on Rochester Road.

Manager Jerry Andree said Friday that construction on the building will start sometime in late April or early May, and the renovations will be ongoing until November.

The project includes replacing a large part of the building’s roof as well as several HVAC systems around the facility. There also will be renovations to the library and other departments that will either get additional space or will be moved to another part of the building.

It’s been at least 10 years since the last renovations at the building, which was constructed in the 1940s and initially served as a steel foundry. The township moved its headquarters there in 1991.

Andree admitted there will likely be disruptions this summer for the thousands of residents who use the municipal center in any given week.

“But our staff has everything pretty well laid out, and we’ve identified all of those challenges,” he said.

The highest contract awarded went to R.D. Stewart Co. for general construction at $1.9 million.

The supervisors also awarded a $656,000 contract for mechanical construction to JB Mechanical, $364,000 for electrical construction to Allegheny City Electric and $102,500 to Shipley Bros. Construction.

The board last month estimated the project would cost about $3.2 million.

Township officials previously estimated that 25,000 people per month use the municipal building.
