8:42 a.m. Tuesday — One person was hurt when a car driven by Kelly R. Wissinger, 21, of Butler rear-ended a pickup truck on Center Avenue at Wallula Avenue. The pickup driver, Jeffrey R. Fennick, 55, of Baden, Beaver County, suffered minor injuries. He was wearing a seat belt.2:30 a.m. Tuesday — Joshua A. McCardle, 26, was arrested for assault after allegedly hitting a 2-year-old son on the buttocks and upper leg with a wooden paddle at the suspect's apartment on Fourth Avenue. Police said the boy suffered a large bruise.McCardle admitted he struck the child because he was “having difficulty with (the boy) being loud and not settling down,” according to court documents.During an interview with police, the defendant told officers that he is listed as the father on the boy's birth certificate, documents said.The child's mother said she and the boy had been staying at McCardle's home for several months. She said she discovered her son's injury when she returned home Tuesday.McCardle was arraigned on a charge of simple assault, and released on his own recognizance.
4:51 a.m. Wednesday — A car driven by Deborah Wolfe, 48, of Prospect struck a deer on Route 8 south near the Burger King.4 p.m. Tuesday — An unidentified vehicle failed to stop for a school bus. Police noted that the incident is the latest in a recent wave of similar cases.According to a police news release, “any vehicle overtaking or approaching a school bus that is stopped with its red signal lights flashing and side stop signal activated (is) required to stop at least 10 feet prior to the bus.”Police said the law applies to any road, including multiple lane highways such as Route 8, or at a part of the intersection where the bus is stopped.The news release reported that police have received “numerous complaints” of vehicles not stopping for school buses on Route 8 south and on Route 8 at Germaine Road.Police said officers would continue to enforce the state vehicle code for the violation of illegally passing a school bus. The violation carries a fine of $250 with an additional $87 in court costs.
10:39 a.m. Wednesday — A student was caught with prescription pills and drug contraband at Slippery Rock High School in Slippery Rock Township. Among the seized items was a suspected marijuana stem, smoking bowl and 19 pills of the painkillers hydrocodone and naproxen.The suspect, a 15-year-old girl who police did not identify, faces drug-related charges.6:15 a.m. Wednesday — A sport utility vehicle driven by Chris J. Cotton, 49, of Butler struck a deer on Route 356 just south of Hannahstown Road in Jefferson Township.6:48 p.m. Tuesday — A pickup truck driven by Wilbert L. Wehr, 62, of Butler crashed into a ditch and rolled over after sliding off ice-covered Linwood Drive/Valvoline Road in East Butler.Tuesday — Brett A. Hilderbrand, 29, of Karns City was arrested after allegedly assaulting his mother during an argument at his parents' house in Petrolia. Hilderbrand is accused of grabbing his mother's head and pushing it against a television stand, a police report said.The alleged victim tried to get away but fell face first onto the floor. She suffered unspecified injuries.Hilderbrand was arraigned on charges of simple assault and harassment, and placed in the Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail.Tuesday — Three Butler County businesses were cited after police, between Sept. 5 and Nov. 3, had to respond to four false alarms at each store in the past 12-month period. Cited were 84 Lumber on Route 422 in Franklin Township, Hau Hinco Trading on Route 68 in Forward Township and Alloy Oxygen and Welding Supply on Route 422 in Franklin Township.
7:44 a.m. Tuesday — A car driven by Cathlynn Bowser, 33, of Kittanning rear-ended a sport utility vehicle stopped for traffic on Route 422 near Red Mill Road in Manor Township. A police report did not identify the other driver.6:15 a.m. Tuesday — An ice-covered bridge was blamed for an eight-vehicle pileup on Route 66 in Manor Township. The chain-reaction wreck happened after the first car skidded out of control and slammed into the bridge abutment.After the first accident, seven other motorists were unable to stop and collided on the bridge. No one was seriously injured.Police, who did not identify the drivers, said the investigation continues.
2 a.m. Wednesday — A car driven by Jason S. Weckerly, 41, of Parker struck a cement culvert on Route 268 just west of Interstate 80 in Scrubgrass Township. Police said Weckerly fled the scene. He faces a ticket for a lane violation.1:40 a.m. Tuesday — A car driven by Timothy A. Balsamo, 32, of Clintonville struck a horse on Route 308 in Clinton Township, Venango County. Balsamo was not hurt but a police report did not indicate what happened to the horse.
Wednesday — Robert S. Sippos Jr., 61, of Pittsburgh was arraigned on theft-related charges stemming from an alleged scam earlier this year in Springfield Township.Police said Sippos met the alleged victim May 20 for the sale of windows, and accepted a $2,000 down payment. However, police said, the suspect never delivered the promised property.Sippos was arraigned on charges of deceptive business practices, theft by deception and theft by failing to make required disposition of funds. He was placed in the Mercer County Jail on $5,000 bail, following arraignment.
Tuesday — An unknown burglar made off with copper wiring, furnace and a heat pump from a vacant home on Wilson Road in Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County. The stolen property had an estimated value of $5,125. The break-in happened between Sept. 1 and Tuesday.
