Butler PoliceTuesday — Nicholas R. Hainer, 22, no known address, was arrested on charges he took $400 from a Butler woman for a home renovation project that he never started.MaryLou Wright, who is 86, on Aug. 12 hired Hainer to do work on the porch of her home on Franklin Street, according to court documents. Wright paid him with a check for $400, which was cashed.Wright notified police two months later after she failed to hear from Hainer and no work was done. Police charged him with theft by deception.Friday — Jason P. Shilling, 22, was charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana after sheriff’s deputies arrested him Oct. 4 at his Walker Avenue home on a domestic relations warrant. A search turned up a baggie containing suspected marijuana. He was taken to the Butler County Prison for the warrant.3 p.m. Thursday — Sean P. Pell, 33, of Center Township was caught with suspected heroin outside the Cigarette Shop on West Jefferson Street. Police went there after a caller reported seeing a drug sale, according to court documents.Officers searched Pell and found him with three stamp bags of suspected heroin and a syringe, documents said. He is charged with possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.Thursday — Michael Paul Jason Chute, 35, of Butler was arrested after police found him laying on the bottom of stairs at a home in the 100 block of West Brady Street. Police suspected Chute was intoxicated. He told officers that he was not injured and declined medical treatment.Police took Chute to the police station where he was searched and found with a prescription bottle containing seven amphetamine capsules, according to court documents. He admitted the pills were his and that he had no prescription for them.Chute is charged with possession of a controlled substance and public drunkenness.

Butler Twp Police1:23 a.m. Tuesday — Andrew J. Wick, 20, of Lyndora was arrested after a failed getaway from police on Woodrow Street.Police found Wick inside a car after responding to a noise complaint. Officers, who suspected Wick was intoxicated, learned he was wanted on a bench warrant.But before he could be handcuffed, Wick took off running behind a house. Officers found him hiding in a Dumpster across from the St. Michael Catholic Ukrainian Church on Hansen Avenue.Police took Wick to the Butler County Prison on the warrant. Additionally, he was arraigned on charges of escape, fleeing and attempting to elude police, possession of a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, underage drinking and public drunkenness. He is held on $10,000 bail.2:10 p.m. Monday — Timothy J. Kovocovsky, 47, of Butler was arrested after he allegedly shoplifted 19 DVD movies, valued at $365, from the Butler Commons’ Walmart. Police suspect Kovocovsky cut off the DVDs’ security features before he fled. Store security caught him in the parking lot and notified police.Kovocovsky was arraigned on charges of retail theft and possessing instruments of crime, and placed in the Butler County Prison on $5,000 bail.7:02 a.m. Sunday — Wendy Plopi, 32, of Butler was unhurt after her car’s engine compartment caught fire as she drove on McCalmont Road. Plopi was able to stop the 2004 Saturn Ion and get out before it became engulfed in flames.Butler Township District 3 volunteer firefighters extinguished the fire. The road remained closed until the fire was put out. Police said the car was destroyed.11:26 a.m. Friday — Vehicles driven by Cody Blake, 26, of Boyers and Zane Scadden, 18, of Kittanning collided on Route 8 south at the Burger King restaurant. Police cited Blake for failing to yield the right of way.

Grove City PoliceMonday — A thief stole a single compact disc changer stereo from a vehicle parked in Colonial Hall parking lot on the Grove City College campus. The stereo, which is black, was stolen between 12:20 p.m. Sunday and 5:30 p.m. Monday.Thursday — A snow shovel was stolen from Your Gym on South Broad Street. The black and gray shovel was taken between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. from the rear porch of the business.

State Police, Franklin7:05 p.m. Tuesday — Wilda R. Chutz, 59, of Emlenton was hurt when the car she was driving crashed after hitting a deer on Big Bend Road in Scrubgrass Township. Chutz, who was wearing a seat belt, had a minor injury.8 a.m. Tuesday — No one was hurt when a car caught fire in Irwin Township near the Venango-Butler County line. The driver, Kelly A. Sandok, 23, of Franklin, was southbound on Route 8 when the 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass’ exhaust caught fire. Sandok and her passenger, a 6-year-old Clintonville boy, got out of the car safely.Oct. 9 — A thief stole scrap metal and vehicle parts from the wooded area of a Butler woman’s rental property on Brown Siding Road in Sandy Creek Township. The theft happened between Aug. 1 and Oct. 9.
