11:09 p.m. Monday — A man walking on West New Castle Street toting a fake gun was no laughing matter to police.Officers were called after a woman reported seeing a man outside her apartment building carrying what she believed was a rifle. City police learned that Butler Township police got a similar call for apparently the same man with a gun.Police found the suspect, David Ansani, 48, of Butler, near his West New Castle Street home; however, he denied knowledge of a gun. But a witness identified the suspect as the man seen earlier with a rifleAn officer, meanwhile, spotted in nearby weeds what appeared to be an assault rifle. The "gun," police said, turned out to be a wooden assault-style air rifle.Ansani admitted the gun was his but that he was just "screwing around," according to a police report. Police charged him with disorderly conduct.3:54 a.m. Sunday — Jared Burtner, 23, of Pittsburgh was arrested for driving under the influence on East Christie Avenue. Police also cited Burtner for careless driving and driving on the wrong side of the road.3:02 a.m. Saturday — Tiffany Kroll, 22, of Renfrew was arrested for DUI after she allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign at North Washington and West Pearl streets. Police said in addition to DUI, Kroll was cited for driving with a suspended license and the stop sign violation.12:50 a.m. Saturday—Daniel P. Hughes, 29, of Petrolia was arrested for DUI after allegedly running a red light at Wayne and McKean streets. Hughes faces charges of DUI and a traffic light violation.3 p.m. July 18 — Police charged a 15-year-old Butler boy with criminal mischief after his skateboard struck the hood of a minivan on McKinley Avenue. Damage to the vehicle, owned by a Butler woman, was $520.
Monday — Police reported several suspects face charges for allegedly shoplifting merchandise during the weekend at the Wal-Mart in Butler Commons.Melissa Sue Graham, 21, of East Butler allegedly was caught Sunday taking cosmetics and hair care items. Police searched her and found she also had three empty stamp bags of suspected heroin. She is charged with retail theft and possession of drug paraphernalia.Paul E. Oden II, 51, of Vandergrift, Westmoreland County, was arrested Saturday for allegedly shoplifting at the store. He is charged with retail theft; police also cited him for driving with a suspended license, driving without insurance, driving without registration, and unauthorized transfer or use of registration.Doug Fudoli, 40, of Butler is accused of trying to take a $142 cordless shaver Saturday; he faces a charge of retail theft.Casey Miller, 22, of Evans City on Saturday was caught allegedly trying to take a pair of shoes. Miller, too, faces a retail theft charge.Kimberly Joy Maher, 25, of Butler was stopped Friday after a store security officer allegedly saw her putting cosmetics and jewelry in her purse. Police charged her with retail theft.William Swisher, 36, of Butler faces a retail theft charge for allegedly concealing or removing merchandise Friday, a police report said, without paying full retail value.5:47 p.m. Sunday — A boy, who police did not identify, suffered only minor injuries when he was hit by a car on Route 8 at the Get-Go convenience store.Police said the boy stepped out in front of the car that David Cupps, 67, of Butler was driving. The boy was treated at the scene.2:47 p.m. Saturday — Justin P. Enslen, 22, of Renfrew is accused of assaulting his 24-year-old girlfriend during a domestic dispute in the parking lot at the Days Inn on Route 8.The woman suffered injuries to the face, neck and chest, but declined medical treatment. Enslen is charged with simple assault and harassment.Saturday — An Old Plank Road resident reported the theft of a 32-inch Pioneer television and a Sony DVD player, which were taken from the victim's home sometime in the past three weeks.
1:30 a.m. today — A 16-year-old Delaware County boy ran away from Summit Academy on Herman Road in Summit Township.About 20 minutes after the teen escaped from the school for delinquent youth, a green, 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue was stolen nearby from a couple's home on Herman Road. The car is valued at $2,000.A police news release did not say if authorities suspect the escape and theft are related.4:15 a.m. Monday — Dale H. Schwalm, 47, of Sewickley, Allegheny County, was arrested and charged with simple assault and harassment, stemming from an altercation at the Bear Run Campground in Muddy Creek Township. No other details were available this morning.Sunday — A weekend sobriety checkpoint netted three arrests for driving under the influence on Route 8 near the Trader Horn store in Penn Township.The operation, conducted by the state police and the Butler County Drug Task Force, stopped 208 vehicles. In addition to the DUI arrests, four people were cited for underage drinking and five people were arrested for a drug-related offense. Also, officers handed out nine traffic tickets and 33 warnings.Sunday — An unknown vandal fired a shotgun at a mailbox several hundred feet from a Deer Creek Road residence in Clinton Township. Police suspect the shooting happened between 1 and 1:30 a.m. Neighbors told police that a small white car was seen in the area at that time.
