Elwood

Evelyn M. Elwood, a long-time resident of Charles Drive in Butler Township, died at 4:55 a.m. Thursday at the Baptist Homes in Pittsburgh, where she had been under care following a partially paralyzing stroke in May 2007.

Born Oct. 26, 1915, as Evelyn Marguerite Lehner and a native of East Brady, Mrs. Elwood was a pioneer in opening commercial food sales positions in Pittsburgh to women and rose to become "Miss Town Talk" and supervised the Braun Baking Co.'s bread division's regional marketing staff and product demonstrations.

Following her marriage to Glenn E. Elwood of Apollo, Mrs. Elwood relocated to New Jersey and became a homemaker and community volunteer, serving, among other positions, as a member of the Ewing Township Board of Zoning Appeals.

Upon settling in Butler in 1955, Mrs. Elwood became active in the Trinity Presbyterian Church, where she was elected to the Board of Deacons and also served on the Building Committee.

An avid bridge player and competitor, Mrs. Elwood was also an accomplished seamstress and needle worker and enjoyed cooking, travel, theater and concerts.

Mrs. Elwood is survived by a son, William E. Elwood of Alexandria, Va.; a daughter, Betty Elwood Roessler of Crafton; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and eight nieces and nephews.

<B>ELWOOD</B> — Friends of Evelyn M. Elwood, who died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the <B>Thompson-Miller Funeral Home</B>, 124 E. North St. Private services will be held at the funeral home with the Rev. Jeff Harris of Trinity Presbyterian Church officiating.
