Lost in Cooperstown

Seven-year-old Michael McCann of Mars got lost in Cooperstown, N.Y., last weekend.

But what a way to get found.

The young McCann was with 10-year-old brother Daniel and their father Dan at the Baseball Hall of Fame Game between the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers at Doubleday Field.

"I've always been a Red Sox fan and my boys are Red Sox fans," the elder McCann said. "That's why we went up there, to watch the Red Sox play."

But during the game - attended by 10,000 people - McCann got separated from his sons.

"I didn't know where they were for maybe five minutes, but, yes, they were lost," he said. "Daniel was old enough to figure out how to find me, but Michael was confused."

Michael wound up finding a New York state trooper in the stands.

"I didn't know where anybody was," Michael said. "I was a little scared. … I saw the policeman, so I told him I was lost."

The trooper took Michael to the grandstand area, in clear view of the rest of the stands and right next to the Red Sox dugout.

Since Michael was wearing a Johnny Damon jersey, the trooper asked the Red Sox center fielder to come over and provide an autograph.

"The policeman asked me if I wanted to step into the dugout and I was thinking, 'Are you serious?'" Michael said. "I walked in there and it was like, holy crap, I'm standing in front of David Ortiz! This is awesome!"

Before Michael's father retrieved him, Michael met Damon, first baseman Ortiz and second baseman Mark Bellhorn.

"It worked out well for him, but the bottom line is, Daniel and I should have done a better job of controlling him," their father said.

A picture of young McCann with Damon appeared on the front sports page of the Syracuse (N.Y.) Post-Standard recently.

"Johnny Damon is my second favorite player," Michael McCann said. "David Ortiz is my first favorite."

Both of the McCann sons are involved in Mars youth baseball. Daniel plays in the Mars Baseball Association minor leagues while Michael plays in a coach-pitch league.
