A Freeport man ran over another man with a U-Haul box truck Monday evening, July 20, in Saxonburg, according to police.

Dennis Ellwood Wolff, 74, then drove down the street, removed the man’s hat from the hood of the truck and threw it in the bushes, according to charges filed Tuesday. Saxonburg police said he returned truck to U-Haul in Saxonburg before returning to the scene of the crash.

Wolff was charged with one felony count each of aggravated assault and accident involving injury, and one misdemeanor count each of simple assault and tampering with evidence.

The man ran over by the U-Haul was flown to an area hospital by StatMedEvac.

Police said multiple witnesses told them how the U-Haul struck the man, stopped while over him, then pulled forward again, further striking the man with the truck’s rear wheels.

According to charging documents, several people including the man who was struck yelled for Wolff to stop the truck, but police said Wolff still drove forward after stopping over the man.

Wolff told police the man he struck had charged at the side of the truck and struck it with his shoulder before being run over. Wolff said he then felt a bump but didn’t see anything when he looked in the mirror, so he continued driving.

Wolff is being held in Butler County Prison on a $25,000 bond. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. Aug. 4 before District Judge Jack D. Ripper.
