BlueSox, Iron Bucks home opener set Sunday

Stadium already hosting baseball

It soon will be time to play ball in Butler.

The Butler Parks, Recreation, Grounds and Facilities Authority announced Monday that the Butler BlueSox and Butler Iron Bucks, both of the Tri-State Collegiate League, will play their home opener at Michelle Krill Memorial Field at Historic Pullman Park at 7 p.m. Sunday, and then play each other again the next day.

“Come out and support your local baseball team and your stadium,” said Cheri Readie, authority chairwoman, at the authority's Monday night meeting.

The BlueSox's first game will be an away game versus a team in Youngstown, Ohio on Wednesday, said Shawn Manning, organizer for the BlueSox and Iron Bucks.

Manning told authority members there are seven teams in the league, but two Allegheny County teams might not be able to play this season because they haven't been able to practice. Both teams practice at high school fields, but the state isn't allowing high schools to open until July 1 due to COVID-19 restrictions, he said.

Despite the potential loss of those teams, Manning said the goal is to keep the schedule intact as much as possible.

The coronavirus restrictions will mean spectator seating at the ballpark will be limited to 249, solicitor Tom Breth said.

Admission will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis, said Dean Selfridge, operations director at the park.

The concession stand will be open under state COVID-19 guidelines that allow three employees to work while wearing masks. Maintenance staff must be available for additional cleaning, according to the guidelines.

In addition to the BlueSox and Iron Bucks, other teams began playing at the park Tuesday. The Oil and Iron League featuring high school teams — including teams from Butler and Freeport — has games scheduled for 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Atlantic Coast Baseball Tournament will be held at the park Friday through Sunday.

The authority agreed to buy 20 dozen baseballs, 35 jerseys and 35 hats for the BlueSox and Iron Bucks at a cost not to exceed $3,000. The money will come from sponsorship revenue, Readie said.

Readie said she would donate grub and weed killer, estimated to cost up to $200, for the field and warning track.
