The vehicle registrations of more than 1,500 Butler County motorists will be suspended if their outstanding Pennsylvania Turnpike tolls aren't paid by 7 p.m. Friday.

The Turnpike Commission reports 1,507 county motorists owe a total of $105,000 in toll violations and invoices.

Under state Law 165, which was enacted last fall, the Turnpike Commission is permitted to work with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to suspend the registrations.

Of the total 10,611 violators across the state, 1,645 already paid up.

“During the first three weeks of the amnesty period, we resolved 19,449 violation notices totaling roughly $1.1 million,” stated PA Turnpike Chief Operating Officer Craig R. Shuey in a news release. “And while it represents a fraction of the 10,611 violators who collectively owe the PA Turnpike $17.1 million, it is revenue we didn't have a month ago.

“Equally as important, chronic toll violators now know what they must do to avoid possible suspension of their vehicle registrations.”

The Turnpike Commission has a partial amnesty program.

Under the program, toll bills and violations less than 60 days old can be settled by paying the outstanding toll amount. All other fees will be dropped.

Violations older than 60 days old were referred to Duncan Solutions, the commission's collection agency. These violations may be resolved by paying the outstanding toll amount and a portion of the other fees will be forgiven.

In some cases, payment plans may be available.

Shuey stressed motorists with six or more outstanding toll violations or invoices — or unpaid tolls and fees totaling $500 or more — should take advantage of the partial amnesty program.

However, the program is not offered solely to repeat offenders.

Motorists with any outstanding toll or violation can receive partial amnesty if they pay by Friday.
