A November trial has been scheduled for a Chester County man charged in the 2021 shooting death of a New Castle man found dead in a running vehicle on a roadside in Muddy Creek Township.

Paris Elias Carter, 28, of Downingtown, is facing a homicide charge in the May 17, 2021 death of David A. Hines, 38, of New Castle.

At a status conference Tuesday, Butler County Common Pleas Court Judge Joseph Kubit scheduled the trial for the November term. The trial will begin the week of Nov. 16 following jury selection Nov. 12 or 13.

Carter has been held in the Butler County Prison without bail since he was arrested May 26, 2021, in Philadelphia.

Carter, his brother Dante Carter, Hines and Tashane Henry — who was driving — were traveling to New Castle from Pittsburgh in a silver Jeep owned by Hines’ girlfriend. Hines was in the front passenger seat. Paris Carter was in the seat behind the driver when he fired three shots at Hines’ head, striking him twice, according to court records citing testimony from Paris Carter’s June 30, 2021, preliminary hearing.

Henry pulled over and Paris Carter began driving. After driving for a short time, he also pulled over. However, the ground where he parked gave way and the Jeep was stuck there, according to the records.

Paris and Dante Carter and Henry abandoned the Jeep with Hines body inside and left on foot. They went to a campground where Henry’s girlfriend picked them up and took them to Henry’s home. Henry and Paris Carter then put their clothes in a nearby trash container, according to the records.

A passerby discovered Hines’ body in the still running vehicle wedged into a hillside along Portersville Road in Muddy Creek Township.

The next day, Paris and Dante Carter, Henry and Henry’s girlfriend and their four children drove to Philadelphia in her gold-colored minivan and dropped off the Carter brothers. Henry and his girlfriend then reported the shooting to police, according to the records.

The Carters made their way to Atlanta, Ga., where the Butler County District Attorney’s Office alleges on May 20, 2021, Paris Carter shot Dante Carter in the back of the head in a ride share vehicle. Dante Carter survived the shooting, according to the records.

In April 2023, a motion filed by Paris Carter’s attorney to prevent the district attorney’s office from presenting evidence about the Atlanta shooting was granted in Common Pleas Court. That decision was appealed to Pennsylvania Superior Court, which upheld the decision, but allowed the district attorney’s office to present evidence that Paris Carter fled to Atlanta, according to the records.

Carter is being represented by attorney Matthew Ness. Assistant district attorney Robert Zanella is prosecuting the case.
