A Butler man was immediately paroled Thursday in county court, after being sentenced to jail for threatening a family member with a gun during an argument.

Derick J. Biedenbach, 23, was sentenced to 11½ to 23½ months in Butler County Prison, with credit for time-served and immediate parole by President Judge Thomas Doerr.

His parole will be followed by two years of county probation. He was also ordered to pay court costs.

There is also a pending Allegheny County matter, and Biedenbach will be returned there to face that case.

Biedenbach pleaded guilty Jan. 10 to misdemeanor recklessly endangering another person and possession of a firearm prohibited.

He was initially charged with felony aggravated assault, possession of a firearm prohibited, misdemeanor terroristic threats, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and summary harassment after an incident June 24.

The felony firearm charge was later changed to a misdemeanor to which he pleaded.

State police filed the charges following an incident on the first block of Vogeleyville Road after a report of shots fired and that Biedenbach was threatening to harm himself and others.

Witnesses said Biedenbach was angry over a child custody issue concerning his 2-year-old son. He was dropped off at the home by a friend and approached a family member with a “sawed-off shotgun,” according to court documents.

It was reported that Biedenbach racked a round into the chamber of the gun, pointed it at the family member and threatened her.

He then put the gun in his mouth and threatened to kill himself, police said.

Biedenbach then ran off, and a short time later a gunshot was heard.

Reports said that Biedenbach had been hiding in the woods while police were on the scene. He was later found at Butler Memorial Hospital.

Police said Biedenbach had been involuntarily committed in 2015, precluding him from possessing a firearm.

Biedenbach apologized, saying he “made a mistake” and was “trying to fix it since the day I got here.”
