During the weekend, police set up a checkpoint to see if drivers were driving drunk. Out of 54 drivers stopped, six people were arrested for driving under the influence. Police also arrested one person for a misdemeanor, another person for a summary criminal arrest. They also gave 19 people traffic citations and 13 people were given written warnings.

2:18 a.m. Saturday — Cody Jonathan Wyckoff, a 20-year-old from Slippery Rock, was stopped by police early Saturday morning for a traffic violation on South Duffy Road, Butler Township. He was arrested and charged with DUI.

Friday — A cellular phone with an estimated value of $75 was stolen from a man’s car parked on Evans City Road.

12:55 a.m. Friday — Adam Brian Coy, 27, of Cabot and Rachel Alexandra Sickler, 24, of Cabot both face charges after an altercation between the pair occurred at a home on North Pike Road in Jefferson Township. Police report that Sickler slapped Coy across the face, and then Coy hit Sickler on the forehead with a glass bottle. Coy faces assault charges while Sickler faces harassment charges.

4:36 p.m. Thursday — Charges are pending following the arrest of a 41-year-old person accused of entering a 51-year-old person’s garage and trying to steal a car. A police report did not identify the victim or suspect. The attempted theft occurred on the 300 block of Heist Road in Summit Township.

9:16 p.m. Thursday — Brian H. Sharpe, 26, was arrested after he allegedly strangled a woman during a domestic dispute at his home on South Church Street.

The victim, court documents said, accused Sharpe of grabbing her around the neck and “causing her to have trouble breathing.” She recounted that he also struck or scratched her arm, causing it to bleed.

Sharpe was arraigned on a felony charge of strangulation and a misdemeanor charge of simple assault. He was released on $5,000 unsecured bail after arraignment.

Thursday — Police obtained an arrest warrant for Michael G. Watt, 42, no known address, on three charges that include deliberately flooding a holding cell at the city police station last week.

Officers about 10 p.m. Aug. 26 found Watt unresponsive from an apparent drug overdose inside a vehicle in the 500 block of South Washington Street, according to court documents. Police administered the opioid antidote drug Narcan.

The defendant regained consciousness, police said, and he was arrested for public intoxication. He was found with three syringes.

Later, while in a holding cell at the station, documents said, Watt caused the toilet bowl to flood by placing a blanket inside it. He also is accused of urinating and spitting throughout the cell.

He is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal mischief and public drunkenness.

6:09 p.m. Wednesday — Dennis D. Frketich Jr., 29, was arrested after he allegedly assaulted a woman during a domestic dispute at his home on Maryland Avenue.

The victim told police, according to court documents, that she and Frketich got involved in an altercation during which she fell down the steps. She suffered an unspecified injury.

The defendant was arraigned on a charge of simple assault. He is free on $2,500 unsecured bail.

11:39 p.m. Aug. 25 — Police stopped Peter Albert McDonald, 62, of Butler for a traffic violation. Police suspected him of driving drunk and later charged him with driving under the influence.

Aug. 23 — A Columbia County man was found with suspected crack cocaine after a traffic stop at Main and North streets. Police said they pulled over the defendant, Zachary T. Knittle, 24, of Bloomsburg, because they knew his license was previously suspended.

During the stop, according to court documents, an officer noticed a small scale in the car. Police later seized from a backpack in the vehicle an uncapped hypodermic needle, a crack pipe, two empty stamp bags commonly used to package heroin and two metal spoons.

A pat-down search of Knittle, documents said, yielded a plastic bag containing suspected crack.

He is charged with possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, and driving under suspension-DUI related.

3:29 p.m. Aug. 23 — Kathy A. Burkett, 54, of Butler was caught inside the Butler Commons’ Walmart, from which she had previously been barred. She is charged with defiant trespass.

[naviga:h3]Slippery Rock University Police[/naviga:h3]

Tuesday — Police charged an Allegheny County man with drunken driving in connection with a traffic stop shortly after 3 a.m. Aug. 20 in the area of Kiester and Stores roads.

Police said they advised the defendant, Devin R. Thorpe, 31, of Creighton that they stopped him for having a burned out passenger side headlight. He acknowledged to earlier having “two beers,” according to court documents.

A breath test later indicated his blood-alcohol level was 0.105 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.

In addition to DUI, Thorpe is charged with driving with a suspended license, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving a vehicle without insurance and a lighting violation.

[naviga:h3]State Park Rangers[/naviga:h3]

Tuesday — Brian J. Hudak II, 25, of New Castle was charged with drunken driving stemming from an incident Aug. 4 at Moraine State Park.

A ranger said he came upon Hudak after a park patron about 10 p.m. reported seeing a domestic dispute. The ranger subsequently found the defendant, who was in the driver’s seat, arguing with another person in the vehicle.

Hudak admitted to drinking alcohol in the park, according to court documents. The ranger also noticed an open 12-pack of beer in the vehicle.

The defendant was taken to the police station in Butler Township for a breath test that showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.089 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.

Hudak is charged with driving under the influence, driving a vehicle with an open container of alcohol and possession of alcohol at a state park.

4:36 p.m. Thursday — Michael A. Butler, 41, of Butler was arrested after he allegedly broke into a garage at a home on Heist Road in Summit Township.

Butler is also accused of getting into a car in the garage and opening the trunk, according to court documents. Police said he removed the garage door opener that was in the center console and used a car jack to jack up the vehicle.

Butler was arraigned on felony charges of burglary, trespass and attempted theft, and later placed in Butler County Prison on $15,000 bail.

7:43 p.m. Wednesday — A Pittsburgh man was hurt when the car he was driving struck a tree along Interstate 79 in Cranberry Township. Patrick P. Becker, 39, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered a minor injury.

A Cranberry Township EMS crew treated Becker, who refused further treatment. His car had to be towed. Police cited him for disregarding traffic lanes.

3:44 p.m. Wednesday — A car driven by Joel A. Glomb, 22, of Portersville struck the side of a pickup truck at Williams and West Park roads in Muddy Creek Township. Dale A. Deriggi, 48, of Freedom, Beaver County, was the other driver.

Police cited Glomb for a stop sign violation, driving at an unsafe speed and driving a vehicle without valid inspection.

11:12 p.m. Tuesday — Craig L. Gaiser, 57, was arrested on charges he assaulted a woman during a domestic dispute at their home on Rogers Lane in Clearfield Township.

Gaiser is accused of grabbing the victim by the head and pushing her into an end table, according to court documents. The woman was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for treatment of an open head wound that required seven staples to close.

The defendant was arraigned on charges of simple assault and harassment. He was released on his own recognizance under the condition that he abstain from drinking alcohol until his preliminary hearing Sept. 18.

9:45 p.m. Aug. 23 — Leighton J. Meals, 25, of Mars was caught with suspected drug contraband while police responded to a possible harassment call at a home on Upper Harmony Road in Connoquenessing Township. He is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Aug. 22 — Lucas David Harvey, 24, of Sarver was charged with DUI in connection with a July traffic stop in Clay Township. Police said they stopped him about 11:40 p.m. July 7 following a report of an erratic driver on Route 308.

Harvey acknowledged that he had been drinking beer at the Big Butler Fair and he showed signs of impairment during field sobriety testing. A breath test subsequently showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.152 percent.

In addition to DUI, he is charged with failing to keep right, disregarding traffic lanes and careless driving.

[naviga:h3]State Police, Kittanning[/naviga:h3]

Monday — Police charged two men, one from Butler County, with having drugs stemming from a vehicle search earlier this month at a store in Manor Township that turned up suspected heroin and pills.

Joshua D. Luther, 39, of Butler and Cody A. Bertres, 31, of Huntingdon, Pa., are both charged with possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, and public drunkenness. Bertres also is charged with disorderly conduct.

Police found the defendants following a call about 8:30 p.m. Aug. 9 for two impaired men at the Sheetz on Route 422.

A subsequent consent search of their vehicle, according to a police report, turned up 17 stamp bags of suspected heroin, 39 unspecified pills and two drug-smoking pipes.

4:58 p.m. Aug. 26 — A 17-year-old Templeton boy lost control of his car and struck an embankment and tree along River Road in Rayburn Township. A police report did not identify the boy, who was wearing a seat belt and was not injured. He was cited for driving at an unsafe speed.

State Police, Mercer

Aug. 26 — An unknown vandal smashed a mailbox at a home in the 1200 block of Harrisville Road in Worth Township, Mercer County. The vandalism happened between 11 p.m. Aug. 25 and 7 a.m. Aug. 26.

Aug. 21 — Daniel B. Kromer, 48, of Volant, Lawrence County, was arraigned on charges he sent sexually explicit text messages last month to a 15-year-old girl in Liberty Township, Mercer County.

Police said Kromer in the texts July 21 tried to persuade the girl to meet and drink alcohol with him.

He is charged with unlawful contact with a minor, corruption of minors and harassment. He was placed in the Mercer County Jail on $15,000 following arraignment.
