JEFFERSON TWP — A Butler Area Rural Transit bus carrying five passengers, including one in a wheelchair, slid off a road and ended precariously balanced on an embankment next to a cornfield Tuesday morning.

Saxonburg volunteer firefighters stabilized the 3-ton bus on Gengler Lane near Golden City Road in Jefferson Township and carefully got the passengers out following the accident about 8:15 a.m.

No one was injured.

“They were fantastic,” driver Dave Slater of Butler said of the firefighters.

The passengers were loaded onto another BART bus and taken to their scheduled destinations at various programs and medical facilities.

A BART driver for five years, Slater said the accident happened moments after he picked up a rider to be taken to a medical facility in Butler.

“I was backing up and the ice and snow grabbed (the bus) and sucked it right down.”

Chuck Himes, owner of Atwell Towing Service, arrived with a wrecker and assessed the predicament. He said a second wrecker would be needed.

“We're going to need one for the front of the bus and one for the back,” he said. “Hopefully we'll be able to lift (the bus), keep it level and slide it off (the embankment).”

State police were also called.
