Wednesday — James F. Chvala, 49, was charged with being more than two-and-a-half times the state's legal limit for alcohol following an attempted traffic stop last week that ended at his home on Route 19 in Muddy Creek Township.

Police said they initially spotted Chvala shortly before 6:30 p.m. Jan. 17 on Route 19 in Lancaster Township when he passed an officer's cruiser with his high beams on, according to court documents.

Officers made a U-turn and tried to stop the defendant, but he continued traveling into Muddy Creek and to his house. He pulled into his garage and closed the door.

Chvala was holding a beer in his hand when officers spoke to him at his house. Police subsequently tried to place him in handcuffs, documents said, but he resisted. Once in cuffs, he refused to walk to the cruiser and officers had to “physically assist” him to the car.

He was eventually taken to UPMC Passavant in Cranberry Township for a blood test that showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.215 percent. In Pennsylvania, a level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated.

In addition to driving under the influence, Chvala is charged with resisting arrest, failing to stop for a police officer and not using low beams.
