Police, fire departments helped

Butler receives grants, donations

Butler's police department and Bureau of Fire have recently received donations and grants.

Police Chief Bob O'Neill acknowledged several donations and praised the donors at Tuesday's city council meeting.

The Butler Lions Club donated $830 to purchase Curaplex Stop-the-Bleed kits that officers use for personal safety in heavy casualty incidents when immediate care would be needed, O'Neill said.

Protection 4 Paws, a Pennsylvania charity that benefits law enforcement K-9s, donated two Hot-N-Pop Pro units costing more than $3,650 that control the temperature inside K-9 vehicles, so dogs do not get locked in or overheated, he said. The units include temperature alarms and door opening systems.

The CB Rangers refurbished and donated detour signs used during parades, festivals and other events, he said. The donation exceeds $1,600.

The fire department received a $14,248 grant from the State Fire Commissioner's office to buy new air monitor meters and hoods that block potentially cancer-causing particulate matter in smoke and soot.

Fire Chief Chris Switala said air monitors measure carbon monoxide and natural gas levels at emergency scenes to protect firefighters.

The hoods block particulate matter in soot and smoke that contain carcinogens from firefighters, he said.

The departments will share a $15,000 grant from Firehouse Subs to buy automated external defibrillators.

In addition, council approved hiring Jacob May as a full-time police patrol officer after successfully completing his probationary period.

In unrelated business, council approved an agreement with Grace Youth and Family Foundation to operate the city's summer recreation program at Rotary Park, Institute Hill playground, Father Marinaro Park and Memorial Park and the summer pool program for $9,000.

Councilman Jeff Smith said Memorial Park was added this year.

Council agreed to allow the Butler YMCA to run the summer food and recreation program at the East Christie Avenue playground.

In addition, council agreed to advertise for new heating, ventilation and air conditioning units for the Public Safety Building.
