Brooke Schaefers of Butler was recently selected to receive the Youngstown State University Pin Award.
The Pin Award recognizes five graduating seniors annually who have achieved academic excellence and demonstrated outstanding leadership, motivation and creativity in university and community activities. Schaefers also is the 2021 recipient of the Phi Kappa Phi Mavrigian-Grim and Order of Omega Parker F. Enright Scholarships.
Schaefers, a 2017 graduate of Slippery Rock Area High School, is the daughter of Mark and Suzanne Schaefers. She will attend graduate school at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science to pursue a master's degree in marine mammal science in the fall.

Twenty Seneca Valley High School musicians recently advanced to the state level of the Pennsylvania Music Education Association (PMEA).
In the performing arts world, this is the equivalent of making it to the state championship.
This year's festival was held virtually with online master classes, sectionals and rehearsals. Students also provided individual recordings of themselves that will be incorporated into a culminating virtual ensemble performance that will be released this summer.
The following choir students that made it to the state level include Allison Alexander (Grade 10), Elizabeth Hixon (Grade 10), Trey Hixon (Grade 11), Colton Marley (Grade 10), Sarah McKinley (Grade 12), Alex Mortier (Grade 12), Greta Schmidt (Grade 11) and Jonah Smeltzer (Grade 11).
The following orchestra students that made it to the state level include Erin Keppler (Grade 11), Jacklyn Ko (Grade 12), Aaron Sedlak (Grade 11) and Madeline Shipe (Grade 10).
The following band students that made it to the all-state wind ensemble level include Alaina Althouse (Grade 11) and Lizzie Sylves (Grade 12). The following band students that made it to the all-state concert band level include Ally Buchek (Grade 12), Jackson Scherzer (Grade 11), Mark Wimer (Grade 11) and Haihan Xu (Grade 10).
SV Band Members, Peter Ko (Grade 10) and Dan Simoes (Grade 11) also qualified for the All-State level but were unable to participate due to a previous commitment.

Rao.———The Seneca Valley Biology Club cleaned up the competition by winning the Butler County Envirothon Competition April 27.The first place team attended the (virtual) state-level competition o May 10.First-place team members include Avani Salunkhe, Ty Laughlin, Josie Walter, Gargi Rane and Mark Wimer.
