Joseph Smith, 86, of Ford City died at 4:35 p.m. Wednesday at ACMH Hospital, Kittanning.

Born Sept. 8, 1920, in Cadogan, Armstrong County, he was the son of Michael and Rose Smith.

He worked at Eljer in Ford City for more than 40 years before retiring.

Mr. Smith was a Navy radar operator on the USSHancock air craft carrier during World War II.

He was a member of the Christ Prince of Peace Roman Catholic church in Ford City, the Ford City City Falcons and the Ford City VFW.

Surviving are two sons, Joseph L. Smith Jr. of Tarentum and Carl J. Smith of Butler; a brother, Larry Smith of South Carolina; three sisters, Elizabeth Vulgan of South Carolina, Dorothy Heinz of Virginia and Peggy Slagle of Louisiana; six grandchildren; and eight great-grand children.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen (Woyton) Smith, who died in 1990; four brothers, and seven sisters.

<B>Smith — </B>Friends of Joseph Smith, who died Wednesday, July 18, 2007, will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the <B>mantini funeral home, </B>701 Sixth Ave. in Ford City. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Christ Prince of Peace church in Ford City with the Rev. Edward Lewis officiating. A vigil of the deceased will be held at 2:45 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and a prayer for the transfer of the body at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the St. Francis of Paola Cemetery.
