Glenn Jeffries

Jeffries

Glenn A. Jeffries, 91, of Mars, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026, at Concordia of Cranberry, Mars, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Aug. 22, 1934, in Blairsville, Pa., the son of the late Albert J. and Mary E. (Lowry) Jeffries.

It was also in Blairsville, in 1955, where he met the love of his life, Gayle M. (Millen) Jeffries, a then 19-year-old nursing student from West Lebanon, Pa. They married in 1956, and spent a blessed, happy lifetime of 61 years together before she preceded him in death in 2017.

Glenn was also preceded in death by three sisters, Lois (Jeffries) Lore, J. Claire Jeffries and Thelma (Jeffries) Bortner.

He is survived by two sons, Gary A. Jeffries (Marianne), of Moon Township, Pa., and Gene A. Jeffries (Susan) of Saltsburg, Pa.; four grandchildren, Andrea M. O’Donnell (Joseph), of Moon Township, Mark A. Jeffries (Elizabeth), of Moon Township, Eric M. Jeffries (Marisa), of Warrington, Pa., and Kristen E. Kessler (Thomas), of Trafford, Pa.; 10 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Glenn graduated from Blairsville High School in 1952, and attended Penn State University in State College, hitchhiking to and from home on holidays and working odd jobs to help pay his way through college. After graduating in 1956, with a degree in business administration, he and his new bride moved to Defiance, Ohio, where he worked as an entry-level manager at a General Motors factory. In 1957, Glenn took a job as an office clerk at Peoples Natural Gas Company in Johnstown, Pa. He was drafted into the U.S. Army later that same year and served two years active duty at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.

In 1959, he and Gayle returned to Pennsylvania and he resumed his job at Peoples Gas. Glenn finished his military service as a reservist at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pa., separating at the rank of E-4/specialist in 1963. In his 38-year career at Peoples Gas, Glenn served at multiple company offices throughout Western Pennsylvania, including Johnstown, Apollo, downtown Pittsburgh, New Kensington, Hopewell, Altoona and Gibsonia, steadily moving up the management ladder, and eventually retiring in 1995, at the position of western division general manager.

Glenn was very active in volunteer community and church-related service. In the 1960s and ’70s he was a leader in the Johnstown and New Kensington chapters of the Jaycees and served on the board of the New Kensington YMCA. In 1976, he was elected to the school board of Burrell School District. He was active in Rotary International in various Western Pennsylvania chapters, and in the 1980s served as president of the Altoona Area Chamber of Commerce.

A 50-plus year Freemason, Glenn was a member of Bethel Lodge, Lower Burrell and the Coudersport Scottish Rite Consistory, Coudersport, Pa. A lifelong Presbyterian, he served in leadership positions in several Western Pennsylvania churches, including most recently, as an elder of Glade Run Church, Valencia, where he had been a member since 1990. He also enthusiastically sang in the Glade Run choir for many years.

Glenn was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed deer and grouse hunting. He was a member since the 1950s of the Old Meadow Hunting Club, a family camp in Potter County, Pa. He loved gardening, spending many happy hours tending the flowers at his former home in Penn Township, Butler County. He and Gayle were also enthusiastic square dancers. Travel was also a favorite pursuit of theirs. They visited such places as Germany, the U.K., France, Italy, Israel, Panama, Hawaii and Alaska.

A caring and gentle man, Glenn was absolutely devoted to his wife and sons. Despite the many demands on his time, he was never too busy for his family. He was a fixture at his sons’ sporting events as they were growing up. He took them hunting, fishing and golfing and spent many precious hours with them wrestling in the living room or playing catch in the backyard. Most importantly, he attended church with them every Sunday and modeled for them the life of a Christian man. Later in life, he took care to build a special bond with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

All who knew Glenn would agree that it was his humble, outgoing and cheerful manner that made him a joy and inspiration to be around. Even after his wife’s passing in 2017, a loss he mourned deeply, he maintained a positive spirit and caring concern for others, always quick with a word of encouragement and clever turn of phrase. A friend and mentor to many, he will be dearly missed.
