The Butler County commissioners Thursday approved bidding out apparatus that would help prison correction officers breath during a fire.
Nine self-contained breathing units will be purchased. The estimated total cost is $41,000.
The county prison already has four units.
Deputy Warden Art Marx said at Thursday's commissioners meeting there would be one unit for each inmate pod.
"When a fire starts in the prison, it's our job to get the inmates out," he said.
Marx said the officer posted in each pod must ensure every inmate is evacuated before leaving the scene of a fire.
He said the units are needed because of time constraints.
"The building fills up with smoke so fast," Marx said.
The specifications for the units will match what the Butler Fire Department has, so firefighters can use the gear if needed.
