Butler man sentenced in robbery, assault cases

A Butler man was sentenced Thursday in Common Pleas Court on assault and attempted robbery charges filed by Butler police in separate incidents that took place on the same day last year.

Zhamare L. Wyche, 21, was sentenced to serve 10 to 23 1/2 months in the county jail in both cases, but was given credit for time served and paroled. He had been held in prison in lieu of bail since Sept. 20, 2024.

Judge Joseph Kubit included $500 in fines, 25 hours of community service and orders to continue mental health treatment and have no contact with the victims in either case. In the attempted robbery case, Wyche’s sentence included 12 months of probation and an order against possessing firearms.

Wyche pleaded guilty to attempted robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery in one case and simple assault and conspiracy to commit simple assault in the other case. He received no further penalty for the conspiracy charges.

Both incidents took place Sept. 19, 2024. Wyche and Brandon M. Caruso, 21, of Evans City, who is a co-defendant in both cases and has been sentenced, assaulted a 60-year-old man at 8:30 p.m. on West Jefferson Street, according to police.

The man told police one of the men struck him in the back of the head with a hard object and the two then began to repeatedly kick him in the ribs and face. When police arrived on scene, the man — who police said is partially deaf and has other impairments — had blood on his shirt from his nose.

In the other incident, police said Wyche and Caruso punched a man in the face, threw him to the ground and attempted to steal his wallet. The man was able to hang on to his wallet before the two ran off.

Police tracked Wyche and Caruso to an apartment the two were known to frequent on West Jefferson Street on Sept. 20 and placed them under arrest.

Similar charges filed against Caruso resulted in a similar sentence from Kubit on July 10.
