Settlement reached in fatal March crash in Jefferson Township
A wrongful death claim filed by the son of a 96-year-old woman who died in a March 26 crash has been settled with the insurance company for the driver of the vehicle she was riding in.
Robert L. Bachman, of North Carolina, one of Lillian F. Bachman’s five children and executor of her estate, agreed to the $100,000 gross settlement with The Hartford, which carries liability insurance for Owen D. Stepp, of Sarver, who was 92 at the time of the crash.
Lillian Bachman was headed to a meeting of the sewing group at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Saxonburg, where she was a member for over 65 years, when the crash occurred.
According to the settlement petition, Stepp was driving a Subaru Outback around 4:30 p.m. and stopped at a stop sign at Burtner and Freeport roads before he turned left onto Freeport Road into the path of a Volvo XC60 driven by Thomas J. Paserba, 50, of Aspinwall.
Paserba attempted to avoid a collision by swerving into the oncoming lane, but struck Stepp’s vehicle on its front-left side, according to state police.
Stepp was transported to Allegheny General Hospital, and Paserba was uninjured. Bachman, a passenger in Stepp’s vehicle, died following the crash.
Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company and Saxonburg EMS responded to the scene and requested an emergency medical helicopter.
Robert Bachman filed a claim with Hartford for $100,000, the limit of Stepp’s liability insurance, and the company agreed to the payment.
From the gross settlement, about $30,271 will got to attorneys who represented Bachman and about $69,728 will go to the estate.
President Common Pleas Court Judge S. Michael Yeager issued an order July 18 for the settlement.
