Programs outlined at Moraine State Park

Moraine State Park is offering several programs in coming weeks.

“The Making of Moraine — Creating a New State Park” will be presented from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Presbyterian Church of Portersville, 1297 Perry Highway, Portersville.

Attendees of this free program will learn how local land use transitioned from the 1940s to the opening of Moraine State Park in 1970. Polly Shaw, author of the book “Images of Modern America Moraine State Park,” will share images and insights of life in the Muddy Creek Basin as the oil and coal industries closed and construction for a park began.

“Ground Hog Stomp” will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 3 at the Park Region 2 office, 195 Park Road, Franklin Township. The program is a guided hike on a scenic section of the Wyggeston Trail.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission will offer its free basic boating course from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Unionville Fire Hall, 102 Mahood Road, Center Township.

The class is for ages 11 and older. Children younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
