Man gets prison sentence for assaulting facility staff

An Emlenton man was sentenced Wednesday, June 2, to serve 12 to 30 months in state prison after pleading guilty to charges filed for assaulting staff at Western Secure Treatment Unit in Allegheny Township.

Derrick O. Robinson, 18, was sentenced in accordance with a plea agreement after he pleaded guilty to a felony charge of assault by a prisoner of a facility employee.

State police filed six felony charges against Robinson following the Feb. 4 incident at the facility, which provides post-adjudication services to young men.

Police said Robinson attacked one employee and a second employee who intervened.

Robinson then began punching a counselor who intervened. Police said the counselor estimated he was punched in the face with closed fists about seven times. The counselor lost his balance and fell, and Robinson reportedly stomped on the back of his head three times, police said.

He was deemed not eligible for the Recidivism Risk Reduction Incentive program in which nonviolent offenders can reduce their sentences if they complete recommended programs.
