Man accused of taking, wrecking motorcycle
CHICORA — A hearing is scheduled next week for an Oakland Township man accused of stealing another man's $23,000 motorcycle.
But not only did 30-year-old Daniel Elmer Neff allegedly take the bike Sunday night, state police said, he wrecked it, too.
He then left it at the scene of the crash, court documents said, not far from where the 2007 Harley Davidson was snatched near the Millerstown Inn bar and restaurant on South Main Street in Chicora.
District Judge Lewis Stoughton on Monday arraigned the defendant on charges of theft and receiving stolen property, both second-degree felonies.
Neff also is charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle and eight traffic violations.
Police said Neff was at the Millerstown Inn about 7:20 p.m. when he left and got onto Edward Birckbichler's red motorcycle and took it without the owner's permission.
Neff and Birckbichler apparently were friends at the time.
Driving without a motorcycle license, the defendant headed south on Route 68, crossed into the northbound lane and struck an oncoming vehicle at the intersection with Medical Center Road.
Police said Neff, who was not wearing a helmet or required eye protection and apparently was not hurt, walked backed to the bar, got into his own pickup and drove away.
A preliminary hearing is set for 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Stoughton's office.
Neff, who is free on recognizance bail, declined to comment. He told the Butler Eagle on Tuesday that he had yet to hire an attorney.
