SPOTLIGHT NORTH IN BRIEF

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock Parks and Recreation will host these activities:

• “Photo Studio” will be offered from 6 to 7:30 p.m. March 19 at the park. This class will teach participants how to create a personal photo studio like the professionals. Cost is $10

• “Paint With Your Friends” will be offered on a date of the participant's choice. Participants can take at least six friends. The cost is $25 per person. Some painting options are available for viewing at www.srartclasses.weebly.com

• Co-ed soccer will start the week of April 13. There will be two age levels: 4- and 5-year-olds, and 6- to 8-year-olds. Cost is $35 for residents in the Slippery Rock School District and $42 for residents out of the district. The cost includes a T-shirt.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Students at Slippery Rock Elementary School raised $18,487 for the American Heart Association Feb. 10 to 12 by participating in Jump Rope For Heart.The money will go toward research for heart disease and stroke. Jump Rope For Heart promotes physical activity and heart health through jumping rope.

SLIPPERY ROCK — The reassignment of several academic departments to Slippery Rock University's College of Humanities and Fine and Performing Arts has prompted a name change for the college. It will now be known as the College of Liberal Arts.“Because we now have the departments of political science, criminology and criminal justice and interdisciplinary programs added to our college, adding the term 'social sciences' to our previous name ... would be too long, so we began looking at alternatives,” said college Dean Eva Tsuquiashi-Daddesio.In addition to the three newly added academic departments, SRU's College of Liberal Arts includes the departments of art, dance, English, history, modern languages and cultures, music, philosophy and theater.

FRANKLIN TWP — The state Fish and Boat Commission will hold a basic boating course from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the DCNR Region 2 Park Office Conference Room, 195 Park Road, just off Route 528.Boaters from novice to experienced skill levels may attend. The course is recommended for the new boater and their families. The class covers basic boating safety, boating laws and regulations and equipment.Students who successfully complete the course are eligible to apply for a Boating Safety Education Certificate issued by the commission. The student must send a check or money order for $10 to the commission.There is no charge for the course, but advance registration is required.
